When lifestyle blogger and vlogger, Ruan Scheepers heard about the newest reality TV show hitting the screens, he just had to enter! We caught with the Umhlanga local who will soon been seen on the brand-new reality TV show, The Longest Date.
By day he’s a brand manager for a South African fragrance company but 35-year-old Ruan’s true ‘happy place’ is in front of the camera as a lifestyle blogger and vlogger on YouTube.
He says entering to be one of the 16 single South Africans to get paired up into eight couples on the brand-new reality TV show was a great opportunity to get in front of the camera as his authentic, bubbly and energetic self.
“The idea of the show is to find love. You compete against the other couples doing some extreme, high-octane adventure activities. It tests you to see how you bond and connect with your partner and if you really have a love connection. The best way to describe the show is a combination of Survivor, Fear Factor, The Bachelor and The Amazing race, all fused together.”
Apart the lure of possibly winning the prize money of R100 000, the possibility of maybe meeting the love of his life, while doing some adrenaline-pumping extreme activities, were what encouraged Ruan to enter.
A week after applying Ruan got the call telling him to pack his bags and get ready for 15 days in the beautiful, scenic Mpumalanga area for filming.
“All I can say is that it was hard and not easy as we thought. We filmed easily between 12 to 15 hours a day, which takes a lot out of you. You have to be mentally and physically prepared.”
Getting the opportunity to visit some of the best spots in South Africa during the show, Ruan says he enjoyed the extreme adventures!
“I never in a million years though I would have had the courage to do the things I did. Being part of a reality show was thrilling on its own, seeing what goes on behind the scenes and all the hard work in producing a high-quality TV show. Making friends with the contestants was one of my highlights and I can honestly say I have made some friends for life.”
When asked what we can expect from the show, Ruan says a lot of drama, thrill seeking adventure and a few twists along the way.
‘There will be a lot of crying . . . and some blood as well. Trust me, you do not want to miss a single episode. I cannot confirm nor deny if things went the way I was hoping for, I guess everyone will have to stay glued to their screens and find out more. But, in all honesty, the experience was everything I wanted it to be and more – and I have a few bumps and bruises to show for it, which I think I will have for a long time to come,” laughs Ruan.
