Local flavour

After the massive success of their previous curry-inspired cookbook, Durban Curry, author Erica Platter and photographer Clinton Friedman’s updated version (aptly named, Curry Up2Date) is a continuation of their ode to the unique flavours of the nationwide treasure that is Durban curry. As with the previous edition, the team visit a number of kitchens and explore a range of curry dishes, all of which come together in a collection of beautiful stories, images and recipes! Every recipe has a personal story and we are particularly fond of the one about Sasol Salt Rock’s famous Mutton Bunny. The Salt Rock Sasol franchise is run by the formidable Praveena Thulkanum who has become somewhat of a ‘bunny celebrity’ on the North Coast over the past decade. When she’s not attending business meetings in Joburg or planning promotions and fundraising events, Praveena is usually coming up with new challenges and events to ensure they retain the status of ‘Sasol SA franchise of the year’, which was achieved last year. The team even managed to crack the world record for a 10m long bunny a few years back! Durban Curry Up2Date is filled with stories like Praveena’s and must-try recipes made by the very best in the industry. A must-buy for home chefs and curry lovers, Durban Curry Up2Date is available at most bookstores, spice stores and online, R395.

Make it great with Maker’s!

Maker’s Mark bourbon whisky is nothing short of legendary. Created by founder Bill Samuel, who decided to go ‘against the grain’ and create a bourbon made from soft, red-winter wheat rather than the popular rye grain, which was the go-to grain for whisky makers at the time, Maker’s Mark is internationally recognized and adored. Easy to drink and full of flavour, the brand double distils the spirit, removing impurities for more fine sipping and, before achieving the perfect degree of char on the 525-pound American white oak barrels, the barrels are rotated by hand for nine months. There are currently four variants in the Maker’s Mark family and the whisky is available at most good liquor stores, from R329.
