Put on your white or red top, gather your friends and family and get ready for a fun three-kilometer run/walk starting at uShaka Marine World in celebration of World Kidney Day on Saturday, 14 March. Entry is free and you can sign up for complimentary blood pressure and glucose tests, a kidney function screening as well as information on nutrition, organ donation and join the blood drive. The walk/run starts in Arena five at 8am and ends in Arena one. The event is held in partnership with Mabliza Lifestyle, the SA Kidney Association and the Renal Care Team Dialysis Centre from Durdoc Centre.

World Kidney Day takes place on 12 March and is a global campaign aimed at raising awareness of the importance of our kidneys.

Three fast facts about kidney health:

  1. About 850 million people worldwide are believed to suffer from kidney diseases.
  2. Chronic kidney diseases (CKD) cause at least 2.4 million deaths per year and are now the sixth fastest growing cause of death globally.
  3. Acute kidney injury, an important driver of CKD, affects over 13 million people worldwide and 85% of these cases are found in low and middle-income countries.
