Get moving … get outdoors!

It’s time to wake up, shake up and get outdoors!

Yes, lockdown has been hard and yes, it’s been a bit cold and dreary … but Spring is here and we can’t think of a better reason to get out and enjoy our exquisite North Coast scenery. Here are some of our favourite ways to get active outside (while sticking to all social distancing regulations, of course).

EXPLORING THE TRAILS AT HOLLA

If you haven’t yet, then it’s time to hire a bike, pop on a helmet and hit the trails. Mountain biking is a wonderful way to get some exercise while being able to enjoy the natural beauty around you. Holla Trails has routes marked out for every level of rider and their team are always on hand to offer advice. If you’re not keen on wheels then let your feet do the work and hit the running trails. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed 5km walk or run through farmlands or a challenging long distance race at top level, they have it all. Holla Trails has a variety of different size bikes for rental, all in good condition and the rental cost includes a helmet and the trail permit. Details: www.hollatrails.co.za, 082 899 3114

SUP’ING AND SURFING WITH THE BETTIES

When you live as close to the warm Indian Ocean as we do, it seems almost unforgivable not to get into the water every now and then. The Blue Betties are a group of women who come together once a month to enjoy (and do their bit to protect) the ocean. The group was founded by Umdloti’s Jade Harding as a way of encouraging people, specifically women, to fall in love with and ultimately protect the ocean. The group aims to help build women’s self confidence and get them back into the sea, regardless of their age or level of skill! The Betties host once-a-month SUP sessions at the Umdloti lagoon (and sometimes others), surfing sessions in Durban and other fun excursions – and anyone can join. The cost is R250 per session and includes a coffee!

SUNRISE YOGA

Nothing connects the mind, body and soul quite like yoga. And when you’re doing it on the beach at sunrise, well, it’s perfection. Kerry Cassere has been practising yoga for over 10 years and teaching for five of those. She was an yoga instructor at the Virgin Active gym until COVID-19 struck and gyms were forced to close. She now offers private lessons, injury-specific sessions, small group sessions, kids yoga and, of course, the amazing sunrise yoga sessions at Thompson’s Bay Tidal Pool. Her times vary according to the season, but classes are currently at 7am. Yoga is a great way to keep your body fit and supple, but is also amazing for stress and anxiety.
