10 things you never knew about TV & radio personality Kriya Gangiah…

She has come a long way since bursting onto TV screens across the country as a presenter on the youth entertainment block Craz-E. Today, Kriya is one of the hosts on the popular television series ‘Mela’, owner of Kri8tive Media and continues to make waves in the radio and television space.

Now, Kriya opens up and shares some tidbits about herself which many may not know about her.

  1. She has big dreams – While Kriya has held her own on some major television and radio platforms and owns a successful digital agency, the star admits that her best days are still ahead of her.  ‘I don’t think I’ve reached my biggest achievement in life yet,’ Kriya admits. ‘I’m such a determined person and there is so much I want to do and create!’
  2. Kriya is a neat freak – While Kriya had a happy-go-lucky personality, many people are shocked to find that Kriya is, in fact, a massive neat freak. ‘I really struggle to deal with areas that are dirty, I need to have everything clean and tidy,’ Kriya admits. ‘It gets on people’s nerves sometimes but I can’t help it! It gets under my skin’
  3. Travelling the world Is one of Kriya’s favourite activities – Kriya admits that one of her favourite things to do is to explore the world and everything it has to offer. To date, Kriya has gone sailing in Croatia, seen the Northern Lights in Norway, explored the romantic city of Paris and, of course, has gone on safari right here in South Africa. The one place that has left a massive impact on the personality, however, is the African island of Zanzibar. ‘I love Zanzibar. Not only is it one of the most picturesque places I have ever been to but the people are so friendly and hospitable.’
  4. She wanted to be a vet when she was growing up – While Kriya is dominating the game as a media personality and digital Wizz, she grew up wanting to be a veterinarian. ‘I wanted to be a vet so badly. I even volunteered at the zoo for three years because I thought it would look good on my application form. I love animals and the thought of being able to help them always pulled me to become a vet. I guess life had another plan for me.’
  5. Kriya’s passion for entertaining led her on her current career path – Although she didn’t land up being a vet, Kriya admits that her passion for entertaining her family and friends ultimately led her to her successful career in radio and television. ‘I have always loved entertaining people and having the ability to make someone smile. This caused a natural progression from the stage as a youngster into finding radio in varsity and then the opportunity came to cross over to TV.’
  6. Family leaves a lasting impression on her – Kriya is very close to her family and while they may be spread out across the country today, family remains an integral part of her life. Many of her fondest memories involve her family. ‘Our parents went out of their way to create special moments for us on a daily growing up. From picnics in the lounge on stormy days to waking up super early to watch cartoons together. My childhood was really special.’
  7. Her most embarrassing moment includes dropping some F-bombs on air – Kriya has mastered the art of presenting on both television and radio, she had hit a few stumbling blocks in the early days of her career. ‘When starting in radio, it can get quite complicated to navigate your brain and mouth in synergy. Once, when presenting the early morning show before breakfast, I manage to completely screw up a link in front of my new boss. I proceeded to swear at myself with a few unpleasant words out loud without realising I forgot to turn off my mic as well. I was mortified but at least my boss thought it was hilarious!’
  8. Kriya is the ultimate tomboy – While Kriya loves the glitz and glamour of dressing up, when the mic is off and the cameras have stopped rolling, Kriya is a massive tomboy. ‘Many people are shocked to learn that I am a jeans and sneakers kind of girl that loves to cuddle with the dogs and cook all sorts of exciting meals. While in lockdown, I have been working hard to improve my culinary skills and pulled off a massive spread for Diwali this year. I am not afraid to get my hands dirty either. I love trying my hand at catch-and-release fishing and anything that gets my adrenaline pumping.’
  9. She believes the Indian community is under-represented in SA – Kriya is incredibly proud of her Indian heritage and is actively finding ways to improve Indian representation in South Africa. I don’t think there is enough Indian representation at all! South African Indians are the one demographic in South Africa that you don’t see in the media – from adverts to actual media placements. We have such amazing South African Indians that are doing phenomenal work and we need to showcase that more.
  10. Kriya would love to go drinking with Ryan Reynolds – If there is one celebrity Kriya would love to go out on a night on the town with, it would be Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds. ‘I think he would be so much fun and have such interesting stories to tell. He has his gin brand so I think he would have exquisite taste when it comes to quality spirits plus he’s super cute!’
