Smashing & painting!

Sometimes you just need to let go and have a little creative, expressive fun! This month the Get It girls were invited to try out two awesome North Coast experiences … and we can’t wait to go back!

Smash It

WHAT IS IT? Everyone’s had that moment … you know the one where all you want to do is just let loose and smash something!? Well now you can – in a safe, controlled and super fun environment! The Smash It smash room (and splash room!) is owned by two Ballito moms who came across the unique concept while on holiday in Clarens. They had so much fun that they decided to start up something similar Ballito!

Such a great way to let go of frustrations!

HOW IT WORKS: On arrival you decide if you’re either going to ‘smash it’ in the smash room or ‘splash it’ in the splash room! Or do both! The smash room is basically a safe, enclosed area where you can ‘go wild’ and smash up empty bottles, old, unfixable appliances, unwanted crockery and pretty much anything your heart desires! Safety comes first, of course, so before you enter the smash room, the team help you gear up from head to toe with gum boots and full protective wear. Then you just have to walk in, pick your weapon (a cricket or baseball bat maybe…?) and start smashing! The music gets turned up loud and for 10 minutes and you can literally let all your frustrations go!

The UV paint splash room is a little more ‘timid’, but no less fun! After putting on your goggles and protective poncho you enter the room which is covered from floor to ceiling in luminous paint. Each person is given a canvas, paints and brushes. Again, the music gets turned up and you can let your crazy, creative juices flow … even painting your friends if you like!

The splash room is just as much fun, with awesome UV paint, loud music and space to just ‘let loose’!

GET IT GIRLS’ VERDICT: Yes, yes, yes we will be back! The smash room was a massive hit – and frustrations were definitely released! One or two of us actually preferred the splash room even more though – especially when we started flinging paint at one another! We had so many laughs and the entire evening was loads of fun and just great food for the soul!

The Pottery

WHAT IS IT? If you haven’t yet visited The Pottery at the Lifestyle Centre Ballito, then it’s time you did. The Pottery is a beautiful, arty space that is all about unique items, creativity and good coffee! A pottery store with a difference, The Pottery is both a retail space and a spot where you can choose a ceramic, grab a brush and paint your own plate, bowl or ornament to take home.

HOW IT WORKS: It’s hard not to feel inspired in this gorgeous, alfresco space. You can’t help but want to pick up a brush and just go for it! The process is easy: simply select an item from the shelves (they have a wonderful range of side and dinner plates, mugs, bowls, platters and little trinkets to choose from), take a seat, order a delicious beverage from the menu and get painting! The Pottery staff (who are all incredibly helpful) will bring you a box of paints, brushes and stencils and then you just have to decide on your design and get creative! After your work of art has been completed, you hand it over to be fired in the kilns (this takes a few days) and then return to collect your masterpiece!

We loved choosing and painting our ceramics together

GET IT GIRLS’ VERDICT: We had such a great time. We sipped lattes and laughed as we let our creativity flow. Choosing a ceramic to paint proved hard for one or two of us (we wanted to do them all!) and committing to a design and colours felt a bit scary for the less naturally ‘artistic’ members of the team. But, once we got into it, all nerves disappeared and we just let go and had fun! It was like therapy! We collected our fired pieces a few days later … and we were all delighted. We will most certainly be back to do more!
