The start of a new year brings with it that inevitable ‘get fit and healthy’ mindset. It might be a challenge to transition from relaxed, holiday mode into the go-getter fitness zone, but doing so in these gorgeous (local!) threads might just help.

Rush Activewear founder Sally Winter

Bright colours, bold prints and beautiful, high-quality designs. You can’t help but feel happy just looking at the beautiful items in the Rush Activewear range, never mind wearing them! This homegrown brand was founded by North Coast local Sally Winter when she returned to South Africa after studying at the London College of Fashion. We found out a little more about the lady behind the brand.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
I was born and raised in Durban. I went to Durban Girls’ College and studied BA (Hons) fashion design technology at the London College of Fashion. I am the youngest of four children and have two sisters and one brother. I have always loved fashion and it was a big part of my life growing up. My mom taught me to sew when I was eleven, when I began tracing old t-shirts and sewing funky, different ones. When I was in high school, I started developing my skills and was eventually designing and then sewing my own patterns. I was passionate about making and designing clothes and often dreamed about opening my own business. Studying in London was an exceptional experience and still influences a lot of what I design today.

When and how was Rush Activewear born?
I started working on the Rush concept as soon as I returned to South Africa from studying at the London College of Fashion. I sewed a pair of tights as my first sample and afterwards I developed more products along the way. While I was developing and working on Rush, I also worked as a lecturer at Vega School for four years. This was an amazing experience and I was able to learn so much.

Tell us about your vision for the Rush Activewear brand and how it has evolved?
Rush was founded in 2015, and since then the range has grown from just being activewear tights to a wide range of athleisure wear, swimwear and resort wear products. Every year I set goals for the company and brand and this helps because I continuously strive to achieve these goals. Rush currently has two freestanding stores as well as being a stockist in many other stores and online. All Rush products are manufactured locally by my two teams of ladies. Our materials are imported from high-end manufacturers, ensuring each garment is made with luxurious, top-quality materials.

Tell us about the style and range and what sets it apart.
Rush offers a cutting-edge and unique take on activewear, athleisure wear, swimwear and resort wear. Our exclusive prints give Rush products a classy and unique take on ‘African-inspired’ prints. Rush products are also exceptionally high quality and each garment, style and design are thoughtfully planned and executed into something that won’t be seen anywhere else. We strive to use only the highest quality fabrics and where the fit of each garment is structured to enable comfort and style.

Who is your clothing aimed at?
Rush clothing is made for women who are fashion-forward, active and want to look stylish and feel confident, where comfort is key.
