It\u2019s also the time of year when the world\u2019s longest running surf contest returns to our shores, and with it, a festival of events for the community to enjoy. This year, the Ballito Pro Presented by O\u2019Neill Festival will take place from 27 June to 9 July, and locals and visitors will be out and about enjoying entertainment, activities and beachside fun.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GET INVOLVED<\/strong><br \/>\nThis year\u2019s festival programme promises an action-packed and fun-filled line-up. There will be two nights of music concerts on 6 and 7 July on Salt Rock Beach, featuring the likes of DJ Merlon, Oscar Mbo, Chynaman, Matthew Mole and The South Port. There\u2019ll also be a market set up at the Willard Beach parking lot, where visitors will have the chance to support local businesses and soak up the festive vibe at the food court and cider garden.<br \/>\nThe After Dark programme will include events organised by local businesses, while beach soccer, sunrise yoga and pilates sessions, daily fashion shows, arts and crafts and exhibitions will keep the whole family busy. Overlapping with the school holidays, the festival will run events specifically for little ones \u2014 think face painting, sand castle building, and a kids\u2019 dance programme.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-27193\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/52205255443_285c0319cc_b-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/52205255443_285c0319cc_b-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/52205255443_285c0319cc_b-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/52205255443_285c0319cc_b-696x464.jpg 696w, https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/52205255443_285c0319cc_b-630x420.jpg 630w, https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/52205255443_285c0319cc_b.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>ALL ABOUT THE BLUE<\/strong><br \/>\nThe theme for this year\u2019s event is Konke KuLuhlaza \u2014 Zulu for Everything is Blue. Collette Bundy, The Ballito Pro Presented by O\u2019Neill Festival Organiser, explains that the event is a celebration of the ocean, and takes inspiration from the local Zulu word \u2018luhlaza\u2019 which means blue. \u201cIt is fortuitous that \u2018luhlaza\u2019 also translates to \u2018green\u2019 because we\u2019ll be weaving stories of sustainability into our ocean narrative with a great festival line-up planned for visitors,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>And when it comes to ocean health, the KwaDukuza Municipality has also taken steps to fully embrace environmental education, sustainability and beach safety. \u201cWe recently launched our Blue Flag Beach programme which will support our iconic tourism status as a key beach destination,\u201d explains KwaDukuza Municipal Mayor Lindile Nhaca. \u201cThrough the event, we will bring awareness about protecting our coastline\u2019s environmental richness.\u201d<br \/>\nThe thread of sustainability will extend to the event merchandise \u2014 O\u2019Neill Blue \u2014 which will be manufactured from recycled cotton and polyester, as well as using a recycling process called Repreve, where used plastic bottles from the oceans and landfills are converted into durable fibres to make boardshorts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DO YOUR PART<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you would like to get involved in a green initiative, look out for the eco-focused events that will be taking place throughout the festival.
