This is how you make that happen:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Budget priorities: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before starting your emergency fund, make sure your budget allows for your fixed monthly costs such as:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mortgage or rent<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">car instalments\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">school fees\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">food<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">petrol\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Insurance<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1249499\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1249499\" style=\"width: 744px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1249499\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2023\/10\/ElanaWagner-29-09-2023-Lifestyle-EmergencyFund.2-744x496.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"744\" height=\"496\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1249499\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It is important to have an emergency fund for those unforeseen instances.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Be realistic about your emergency fund: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your fridge stops working, geyser bursts, or the motor for your gate breaks down. You spill coffee on your laptop. You need to replace these. So you also need to plan for this by setting aside money each month in an emergency fund that will at least be enough to help cover these relatively common unexpected costs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Prepare for worst-case scenario: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Besides being there for small, unexpected breakdowns, your emergency fund is a critical safety net in the event that you find yourself unemployed or your business closes down. It is advisable to have enough money to cover at least three to six months\u2019 living expenses saved in an emergency fund in the event of unemployment, to tide you over until you begin to earn an income again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><b>Commit to saving: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Set up an automatic payment schedule on your current account so that your monthly emergency fund payments are deducted as soon as you receive your income each month and go into your separate savings accounts.
