Bartending started as a way to save money and travel, but what he didn\u2019t realise when he first started out was that his work would lead him on adventures around the world. While travelling across<br \/>\nAsia, he bartended as he went, spending time in India, Thailand and Cambodia.<\/p>\n<p>During this experience, he learnt skills that have since allowed him to embark on a career that he loves. Originally from north London, Richie has been in South Africa for almost three years. \u201cI decided to come over here to pursue new opportunities,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s been the greatest move! It\u2019s beautiful here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alchemy has given Richie a platform to really elevate his career, and he says he has learnt a lot from being part of the team and having so much creative freedom. Although he isn\u2019t formally trained in mixology, Richie says he has been able to pursue a passion. \u201cIt\u2019s more than just putting things into a shaker,\u201d he laughs. \u201cThere\u2019s a technical side to it<br \/>\ntoo. When it comes to making the ingredients and understanding flavour, there\u2019s a lot of science and chemistry that goes into the process. I really like that aspect. Sometimes, I\u2019ll just wake up with an idea and I\u2019ll want to see how it goes. He guided us through the step-by-step process of making three different cocktails \u2013 a refreshing grapefruit mocktail, a spiced lychee sour and a spiced cassia daquiri.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"td_quote td_quote_left\"><p>your drink must look, smell and taste good<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>When it comes to whipping up the perfect cocktail, Richie says there are a few things to consider \u2013 first, your drink must look, smell and taste good. And, it\u2019s all about balancing sweet, sour and alcohol for a flavour that\u2019s just right. His suggestion for making cocktails at home is to always try and invest in good quality ingredients. \u201cYour cocktail can only be as good as your worst ingredient,\u201d he says. Richie gave us plenty of tips and tricks along the way, but his key message was simple: making your own cocktails should be fun. \u201cDon\u2019t take it too seriously,\u201d he says. \u201cAt the end of the day, if you enjoy something, drink it and keep playing.
