{"id":30921,"date":"2023-12-08T16:00:27","date_gmt":"2023-12-08T14:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/?p=30921"},"modified":"2023-12-07T17:42:41","modified_gmt":"2023-12-07T15:42:41","slug":"how-to-set-up-a-first-aid-kit-for-your-pet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/blog\/2023\/12\/08\/how-to-set-up-a-first-aid-kit-for-your-pet\/","title":{"rendered":"How to set up a first aid kit for your pet"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Having a well-stocked first aid kit at home for your pet will definitely come in handy when it comes to dealing with minor issues that don\u2019t call for a vet appointment.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is important to remember that you can\u2019t just open up your own first aid kit to assist your pets, as many medications, disinfectants and ointments that are safe for humans are far from pet-friendly.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make sure to include these seven items in your pet\u2019s first aid kit to keep you covered and prepared for most, minor incidents:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Digestive distress<\/b>: Be it drinking the salty seawater during a beach outing or eating something they shouldn\u2019t have at the doggy park &#8211; dogs get an upset tummy quite often, so it\u2019s best to have a digestive aid such as Diomec paste, Prokolin or Canigest handy.<\/p>\n<p><b>Gastrointestinal support<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Activated charcoal aids and probiotics like Protexin are good to have on hand if your dog has a bad stomach, but if you see them vomiting, rather go to the vet immediately.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Wound care<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ask your vet for Hibitane or Biotaine, pink disinfectants that are good to have at home. There are also soap-based versions that you can dilute, which are very helpful for cleaning a dirty paw with a cut, for example. Ask your vet for a small bottle to keep at home.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep cotton wool on hand and gauze swabs to clean the wound, and some antibacterial cream for small cuts and grazes. Gauze bandaging material is a worthwhile addition to keep larger wounds closed while you are on the way to your vet. Add some gloves and a pair of scissors to cut the gauze bandage.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1258553\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1258553\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1258553\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2023\/12\/ElanaWagner-08-12-2023-Pets-FirstAid-.1-420x280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"280\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1258553\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Happy dog. However, persistent issues do require a vet&#8217;s attention as they can check for corneal ulcers or foreign bodies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Constipation and hairballs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Laxapet paste helps with constipation in dogs and cats, and if your fluffy feline struggles with hairballs, a dose of Laxapet often helps move the hair through the gut nicely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ear care<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Include an ear flush such as Epiotic and wipes for regular ear cleaning as it removes wax out of ear folds. If there is an ear infection deep in the ear canal, you will see the wash coming out dark brown, then you know it\u2019s time to go to the vet for a good look in those ears.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Essential tools<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: Invest in a good pair of nail clippers and keep the nails trimmed to help prevent them from getting hooked on something and tearing.
