Ludwig\u2019s advice is to plant enough roses close together so that bees don\u2019t use up their energy hunting for pollen.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have space, plant climbing or willowy shrub roses against a trellis on walls or use the rose-covered trellis as a flowering wall.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-1271416\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/03\/Alice-Coetzee-15-03-2024-gardening-roses-picture-2-420x315.jpg\" alt=\"rose \u2018Dainty Bess\u2019\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Single roses with five petals have their very own charm. The best known single rose is \u2018Dainty Bess\u2019, which produces clusters of pink blooms. It was introduced in 1925, so is not far away from its centenary, yet is still a wonderful garden performer.<\/p>\n<p>There are many single floribundas, the best known is \u2018Johannesburg Garden Club\u2019, a neat shrub, growing about 1.1m high, covered with delicate soft coral coloured blooms. A gardener\u2019s favourite, it produces an abundance blooms. Use in pots, or in landscapes. A mutation (sport) of that rose is <strong>\u2018<\/strong>Duncan&#8217;s Rose\u2019 with deep pink single blooms.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1271417\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1271417\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1271417\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/03\/Alice-Coetzee-15-03-2024-gardening-roses-picture-3-420x281.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"281\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1271417\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">rose \u2018Yellow Butterfly\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>\u2018<\/strong>Yellow Butterfly\u2019 is another favourite because the blooms look like a flock of butterflies on the bush. It is a neat little shrub, producing wave upon wave of blooms into winter. Excels in a container, as a hedge or massed in huge landscape projects. Grows about 0.8m high.<\/p>\n<p>Although single blooms\u00a0do not last quite as long as full petalled flowers they are\u00a0replaced much quicker\u00a0and always have a fresh\u00a0look.<\/p>\n<p>To create a romantic effect with single roses, Ludwig suggests planting them with other flowers in large beds or borders.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best for containers<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1271418\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1271418\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1271418\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/03\/Alice-Coetzee-15-03-2024-gardening-roses-picture-4-420x315.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1271418\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">rose \u2018Bravo Babylon Eyes\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Compact growers like \u00a0\u2018Bravo Babylon Eyes\u2019 (picture), \u2018Butterfly Kisses\u2019 and \u2018Fortuna\u2019 are superb in large pots or when used as groundcovers. Their \u2018novelty\u2019 value is also something to be considered.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s exceptional about \u2018Babylon Bravo Eyes\u2019 is that the \u00a0stiff petals that stay firm under hot sun. The blooms change colour as they age, so that at any one time the bush will be covered with blooms in different shades, from light pink to reddish pink.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Butterfly Kisses\u2019 is a very healthy, free flowering rose that grows to hip height and attracts both butterflies and bees. It produces large sprays of 25 to 45 single blooms through to winter.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Double duty for bees<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1271419\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1271419\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1271419\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/03\/Alice-Coetzee-15-03-2024-gardening-roses-picture-5-420x281.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"281\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1271419\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">rose \u2018Purple Glow\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It is not just single roses that attract bees and butterflies, says rose grower Ludwig Taschner. Any rose that has exposed stamens and pistels makes it easy for the bees.<\/p>\n<p>These are mostly semi double bush roses \u2018Iceberg\u2019 and all its variations. The vibrant \u2018Purple Glow\u2019\u00a0 always has busy bee\u2019s amongst its blooms, as do the soft pink blooms of floribunda \u2018Mount Nelson\u2019 . There are also the highly perfumed yellow flowering \u2018 Courvoisier\u2019 and\u00a0 \u2018Friesia\u2019 as well as \u2018Perfumery\u2019.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1271420\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1271420\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1271420\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/03\/Alice-Coetzee-15-03-2024-gardening-roses-picture-6-420x281.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"281\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1271420\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">rose \u2018Courvoisier\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Climbing and shrub roses <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of the climbing roses, &#8216;Cocktail&#8217; is a favourite, flowering throughout the season with\u00a0bright orange-red blooms and a yellow eye.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1271421\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1271421\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1271421\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/03\/Alice-Coetzee-15-03-2024-gardening-roses-picture-7-420x630.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"630\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1271421\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">climbing rose \u2018Cocktail\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As a security barrier-hedge, <strong>\u2018<\/strong>Rosa bracteata Macartney\u2019 (white petals with\u00a0prominent\u00a0golden stamens) covers up to 10 square metres, enveloping fences and walls.
