{"id":32849,"date":"2024-04-12T10:00:11","date_gmt":"2024-04-12T08:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/?p=32849"},"modified":"2024-06-14T11:33:31","modified_gmt":"2024-06-14T09:33:31","slug":"grand-performing-roses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/blog\/2024\/04\/12\/grand-performing-roses\/","title":{"rendered":"Grand performing roses!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Climate change and busy lifestyles have shifted the focus onto garden plants that are low on maintenance and are strong growers even in relatively poor conditions.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>In medium to large gardens there\u2019s always a need for shrubs or climbers to fill a space, usually towards the back of the garden or to soften a wall or fence.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, rose grower Ludwig Taschner has sought out shrub roses with ultra-vigorous growth, tough leathery leaves, strong spreading roots, and pickable blooms.\u00a0 He has also factored in disease resistance for low maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>The two types of shrub roses are the upright bushy GrandiRosa varieties and the more spreading, informal Panarosa\u2019 varieties with arching growth that can also be trained onto a trellis or other support.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GrandiRosa \u2026what\u2019s to like. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2018GrandiRosa\u2019 roses generally grow 1.8m to 2m high and produce clusters of large full blooms. They can be used as stand-alone shrubs, at the back of borders, as living screens, in shrubberies and as hedges.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1276106\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1276106\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1276106\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/04\/Alice-Coetzee-12-04-2024-gardening-roses-photo-2-420x315.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1276106\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u2018Just Joey GrandiRosa\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One such rose is \u2018Just Joey GrandiRosa\u2019 which is comparable to the favourite \u2018Just Joey\u2019 hybrid tea but on a much larger scale. It commands attention, wherever it is planted. It is a powerful growing rose that produces bunches of pickable roses on strong canes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1276107\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1276107\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1276107\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/04\/Alice-Coetzee-12-04-2024-gardening-roses-photo-3-420x279.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"279\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1276107\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u2018Lioness GrandiRosa\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018Lioness GrandiRosa\u2019 was one of the first roses introduced in this category. It grows up to 3m high and will easily screen walls and fences. The strong stems sprout from all levels and carry clusters of large, full blooms.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1276108\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1276108\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1276108\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/04\/Alice-Coetzee-12-04-2024-gardening-roses-photo-4-420x489.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"489\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1276108\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u2018Red GrandiRosa\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Other impressive growers are \u2018Red GrandiRosa that produces clusters of three to five large red blooms that do not fade even under the hottest sun and \u2018Carmine GrandiRosa\u2019 which has magnificent carmine-pink blooms. Because of the vibrancy of their blooms, both roses are ideal for use as focal points or features.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1276109\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1276109\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1276109\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/04\/Alice-Coetzee-12-04-2024-gardening-roses-photo-5-420x369.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"369\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1276109\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u2018Carmine GrandiRosa\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>GrandiRosa roses also work well hedges, like the apricot \u2018Fruity GrandiRosa\u2019 that is a neat bush that flowers repeatedly. The spent flowers drop off cleanly, it is highly disease resistant and it is an ideal choice for background planting, as a hedge or screen and as additional security when planted against a fence.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1276110\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1276110\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1276110\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/04\/Alice-Coetzee-12-04-2024-gardening-roses-photo-6-420x263.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"263\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1276110\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u2019Fruity GrandiRosa\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Panarosa roses <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Panarosa roses grow into free-standing specimens, 2m to 3m high and wide with flowers on every cane, providing a panorama of roses. The flower shapes can vary from hybrid tea to double and the old-fashioned shapes. They are hardy and drought tolerant.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1276111\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1276111\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1276111\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/04\/Alice-Coetzee-12-04-2024-gardening-roses-photo-7-420x281.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"281\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1276111\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u2018Artista Panarosa\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They have many uses in the garden, as single specimen plants or as a group in a large garden, as a hedge or along a fence.
