Sharon Baldwin (nee Rothwell), a paediatric physiotherapist at Eden Health in Salt Rock, tells us about the rewarding work she does.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sharon’s career in physiotherapy started with a different vision. Initially, she aimed to specialise in equine physiotherapy. Her path, however, took a turn towards neurological rehabilitation after her community service year. Working in rehabilitation at Entabeni Hospital in Durban, she dealt with patients suffering from strokes, head injuries and spinal cord injuries.
\nThis experience honed her skills in a collaborative environment, working alongside occupational therapists, speech therapists, doctors and other healthcare professionals.
\nFor seven years, Sharon thrived in this setting, developing a deep connection with her patients and their families. It was during this time that she encountered paediatric cases, which sparked a newfound passion. Overcoming her initial apprehension towards working with children, Sharon pursued specialised training in Neurodevelopmental Therapy (NDT), also known internationally as the Bobath approach. Ten years ago, she established her own practice in Durban North and in 2022, she relocated to Ballito, partly because of a growing need for her services in the area.<\/p>\n

UNDERSTANDING PAEDIATRIC PHYSIOTHERAPY<\/strong>
\nPaediatric physiotherapy is a specialised branch of physiotherapy that focuses on the physical development and rehabilitation of infants, children, and adolescents. It involves assessing and treating children who have physical and developmental conditions to help them achieve their age-appropriate milestones.
\nSharon explains that her role is to facilitate a child\u2019s development by addressing physical, sensory, and cognitive aspects and referring to other practitioners whenever necessary. Conditions commonly treated include cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and other neurological disorders. The goal is to enhance the child\u2019s mobility, independence and overall quality of life.<\/p>\n

COLLABORATIVE AND HOLISTIC APPROACH<\/strong>
\nSharon\u2019s approach is deeply collaborative, working closely with other health practitioners such as occupational therapists and speech therapists. This team-based approach ensures comprehensive care, addressing all facets of a child\u2019s development.
\nA significant part of her work also involves supporting and educating parents. Sharon acknowledges that parents\u2019 insight and engagement are crucial to a child\u2019s progress. She provides them with the necessary tools and knowledge to continue therapy at home, making them active participants in their child\u2019s development.<\/p>\n

CHALLENGES AND REWARDS<\/strong>
\nWorking in paediatric physiotherapy is both challenging and rewarding. One of the biggest challenges Sharon faces is the emotional and financial strain on families. Not all conditions are covered by medical aid, making it difficult for some families to afford the necessary treatments. Despite these challenges, the rewards are immense. Sharon finds joy and fulfilment in witnessing the progress and milestones achieved by her young patients. Each child\u2019s journey is unique, and being a part of their growth and development is a privilege she cherishes. \u201cIt\u2019s so rewarding to be part of a child\u2019s journey,\u201d she says. \u201cI love being able to help them gain independence in walking or crawling, for example, and to be able to influence their life positively.\u201d<\/p>\n
