{"id":37417,"date":"2025-01-27T09:26:17","date_gmt":"2025-01-27T07:26:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/?p=37417"},"modified":"2025-01-27T09:26:17","modified_gmt":"2025-01-27T07:26:17","slug":"a-heart-for-special-needs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/blog\/2025\/01\/27\/a-heart-for-special-needs\/","title":{"rendered":"A heart for special needs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Founder of Hands and Hearts Autism Interventions, Leigh De Bruyn, has recently taken over The Autism Project in Salt Rock, and is excited to be doing more of what she loves.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Leigh never planned to work with children. She initially thought her psychology degree would lead her to work with adults. But life had other plans.<br \/>\n\u201cI was about to start my honours when my mom passed away suddenly,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was a tough time, and I took a year off to process everything. When I returned to my studies, I did an internship at a children\u2019s home, which was incredibly challenging but also a turning point for me.\u201d<br \/>\nHer path eventually led her to the world of autism. Working at a Durban-based centre specialising in strict Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) methods, Leigh fell in love with the field. \u201cI thought, \u2018This is amazing!\u2019 It opened my eyes to how much potential these kids have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leigh later joined Tam Bennett, the owner of The Autism Project, a centre with a more holistic approach, which she describes as transformative. \u201cTam was my mentor and helped me find my place in this field. It wasn\u2019t just about therapy; it was about building a community and values.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Leigh took over from Tam at The Autism Project in Salt Rock, marking another milestone in her journey. \u201cIt just feels like the right time and place,\u201d she says. \u201cThe community here has been incredibly welcoming and collaborative, which makes such a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her own venture, Hands and Hearts, started small. \u201cI began with just one family at a time,\u201d Leigh explains. \u201cIt\u2019s grown so much since then, and I\u2019ve never looked back.\u201d Now based in a spacious house in Morningside, complete with a playground and therapy rooms, Hands and Hearts is a thriving space where children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can grow, learn and thrive.<\/p>\n<p>Leigh describes her work as both challenging and rewarding. \u201cEvery day is different. I love the quirks of the kids \u2013 their passions, their fixations. We build on those strengths, whether it\u2019s trains, dinosaurs, or something completely unexpected. It\u2019s their superpower, not a disability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leigh\u2019s work isn\u2019t just about providing therapy. It\u2019s deeply personal. In honour of her late mother, Anne, she launched a non-profit organisation called Anne\u2019s Little Angels. \u201cMy mom always emphasised giving back. With Anne\u2019s Little Angels, we aim to help families who can\u2019t afford therapy. It\u2019s about ensuring they have access to early intervention, screenings and resources,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation also focuses on educating teachers in under-resourced areas about recognising the signs of autism. \u201cEarly intervention is key. We want to go to preschools and day cares and equip teachers to spot the signs and guide families to the help they need,\u201d Leigh explains.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LEIGH\u2019S TIPS FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH AUTISM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Take it one step at a time<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cDon\u2019t panic. Accept it, process it, and reach out for support. There\u2019s a community ready to help.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 Focus on connection<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cNot everything has to be about engagement or stimulation. Sometimes, just playing with your child is enough.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 Don\u2019t overwhelm yourself<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cPick your battles. You don\u2019t need to work on everything at once. Focus on one area and build from there.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 Reclaim your role as a parent<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cMany parents feel pressure to \u2018do it all.\u2019 Remember to just be a mom or dad. The bond you build with your child is what truly matters.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong>\u2022 Seek support<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cConnect with others who have been through this journey.
