The competition involved over eight months of rigorous judging by a panel of 30 incognito experts, all in search of exceptional coffee.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"td_pull_quote td_pull_center\"><p>In KZN, coffee shops are the cornerstone of the hospitality industry, offering spaces where you can linger over a freshly brewed espresso or a creamy cappuccino.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ingrid Shevlin, founder of Shrewd Food and a respected food critic, oversaw the competition to ensure it maintained the highest standards. Judges evaluated each caf\u00e9 on the quality of their cappuccinos and espressos, as well as the overall coffee experience.<br \/>\n\u201cIn KZN, coffee shops are the cornerstone of the hospitality industry, offering spaces where you can linger over a freshly brewed espresso or a creamy cappuccino while chatting with friends. When thinking about our coffee shops, we realised the importance of affordable community spaces,\u201d Ingrid explains. \u201cWhile many restaurants did not survive Covid, most coffee shops did! They kept the industry and the spirit of cafe society alive and provided places for people to meet, work and enjoy a bean brew. The coveted title of KwaZulu-Natal\u2019s Best Coffee Shop was awarded to Coffee LAB in Ballito, owned by Sbu Nkolothi.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>Originally from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, Sbu\u2019s coffee journey began as a golf caddy before he moved to Durban in 2010. After years of working in hospitality, his passion for coffee led him to train baristas and eventually open Coffee LAB in 2020. \u201cCoffee brings people together. It connects them. When I make coffee, I\u2019m able to engage and build relationships. I love people,\u201d Sbu says.<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Another local favourite, Skyline Coffee in Salt Rock, claimed second runner-up. Owner Darren Lewis, a former regional manager for Vida e, took over the caf\u00e9 in 2023, drawn to its strong community spirit. \u201cA great coffee shop is about serving consistently excellent coffee and food, knowing every regular\u2019s order, and creating a welcoming environment. The overall standard was exceptionally high, from service and community spirit to beautifully poured coffees and unique flavours. I\u2019m proud of the caf\u00e9s in KZN!\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Battle of the Beans 2024 not only crowned the best coffee shop in the province, but it also highlighted the incredible passion, resilience and community spirit of KZN\u2019s coffee scene.
