They\u2019re not pro anglers or polished influencers – just two best mates sharing the wild, wonderful (and often hilarious) reality of kayak fishing on the North Coast.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\"\"Meet the Salt Rockers – Francois van der Merwe and Justin Flemmer – whose ocean adventures have built an online following hooked on big catches, epic fails and a whole lot of fun. Francois, a GP, and Justin, who works in imports and exports, started filming their kayak fishing trips more for laughs than likes. \u201cWe were always capturing footage of our ocean adventures anyway,\u201d says Francois.
\n\u201cSo eventually we thought, why not share it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"Learning (and laughing) along the way<\/strong>
\nTheir YouTube channel and Instagram page are a mix of tips, tricks and entertaining misadventures. \u201cWe\u2019re not professionals,\u201d Justin laughs. \u201cWe just want people to learn from our experiences – even if it\u2019s what not to do!\u201d<\/p>\n

Wipeouts and war stories<\/strong>
\nThat includes camera chaos (like filming a blank screen during a massive catch), a close encounter with a hungry bull shark, and a kayak crash that recently landed Francois and his girlfriend in matching knee braces. \u201cA freak wave caught us and slammed the kayak into both of us,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe tore our ACLs and MCLs – and had surgery on the same day. She\u2019s not too keen to go out again!\u201d<\/p>\n

Braving the surf<\/strong>
\nIt\u2019s all part of the Salt Rockers\u2019 charm – honest, unfiltered stories from the water. They also don\u2019t shy away from the challenges unique to the North Coast. \u201cPeople overseas usually launch in much calmer conditions. We\u2019re paddling through big surf before we even start fishing,\u201d explains Justin.<\/p>\n

Camera vs chaos<\/strong>
\nCapturing content mid-chaos isn\u2019t easy. \u201cNinety-nine percent of fishing is boring,\u201d says Justin. \u201cThen during the one percent of action, everything needs to go right – the rod, the kayak, the camera. It\u2019s madness!\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"From childhood passion to grown-up adventure<\/strong>
\nFrancois and Justin have both been fishing since childhood – Francois on family trips to Cape Vidal and Justin with his dad. Their gear is simple: GoPros, trusty kayaks and a lot of patience. With full-time jobs, they usually squeeze in a paddle once a week, more often in summer.<\/p>\n

Helping others get hooked<\/strong>
\nThey have also started creating beginner content. \u201cA lot of guys don\u2019t know how to start kayak fishing,\u201d says Justin. \u201cWe\u2019ve done intro videos, and there\u2019s so much more we want to share.\u201d<\/p>\n

More than just fishing<\/strong>
\nTheir relaxed style and local flavour have earned them fans not just in South Africa, but also in New Zealand, Australia and the US. But the best part? \u201cSharing the catch,\u201d says Francois. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing better than filleting it, firing up the braai and enjoying it with friends and family. We also make an excellent poke bowl and sushi!\u201d<\/p>\n
