Rewilding is gaining momentum across South Africa, as communities, developers and conservationists recognise the urgent need to restore native habitats and reconnect people with nature. The trend is reshaping how we think about development \u2013 blending homes with thriving, living ecosystems.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

We caught up with landscape architect Bernice Rumble to explore the vision behind Seaton Estate\u2019s \u201cNature First\u201d project, a pioneering approach to rewilding and restoring natural open spaces right here on the North Coast.<\/p>\n

\"\"WHAT INSPIRED THE \u201cNATURE FIRST\u201d APPROACH?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Our core design principle is to rewild and activate the natural open spaces. This idea was shaped by the comprehensive environmental process that guided the development. Through this process, we identified key environmental assets, protective buffers and the biomes present on the property, even where these had been degraded.<\/p>\n

HOW DOES THE PROJECT PROMOTE HEALTH AND COMMUNITY?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

We focus on five key elements:<\/p>\n

1. Moving naturally<\/strong>
\nTrails and pathways encourage everyday movement. These features are designed to inspire an active, outdoor lifestyle.<\/p>\n

2. Building community<\/strong>
\nCommunal parks, rewilded valleys and sports facilities all foster connections between neighbours.<\/p>\n

3. Sense of purpose<\/strong>
\nA supportive environment makes it easier for residents to find their own \u201creason for getting up in the morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

4. Downshifting and de-stressing<\/strong>
\nWe hope residents will embrace outdoor rituals as the estate matures.<\/p>\n

5. Intergenerational living<\/strong>
\nWith nature in abundance, Seaton attracts all ages. Research shows that intergenerational living supports mental health, mutual support and a strong sense of community.<\/p>\n

HOW IS BIODIVERSITY BEING RESTORED?<\/strong><\/h5>\n

Rewilding focuses on restoring the existing biomes, a process that can be slow but is incredibly rewarding. It often takes three years or more to see real results. Our goal is to bring biodiversity back through what I call \u201cquiet restoration\u201d. We intervene only when necessary and let nature do the rest. It is a patient approach that helps nature thrive, benefiting both the environment and the people who live here.<\/p>\n

Beyond the estate, the transformation from sugarcane farming to large-scale rewilding is reconnecting previously fragmented habitats. This creates opportunities for true biodiversity to flourish. We are also focusing on improving the soil, which has been depleted by years of farming.<\/p>\n
