We chatted to one of South Africa\u2019s most loved comedians about life on the North Coast.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Once known as the guy in the quirky jerseys, Schalk Bezuidenhout has quietly evolved into one of South Africa\u2019s most honest and introspective comedians. Still hilarious, but also deeply human. These days, he\u2019s also a Ballito local. Sort of by accident.<\/p>\n

\u201cI moved here as part of a married couple\u2026 and then that ended,\u201d Schalk says candidly.<\/p>\n

He had two options: sell the house and move back to Joburg, or stay and make it work.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always loved KZN,\u201d he says. \u201cWe used to come here for December holidays. And Ballito really is lovely.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now he\u2019s an unlikely ambassador for the North Coast. \u201cI suddenly went from being like, \u2018What the hell, how did I end up here?\u2019 to being a super big advocate,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\"\"A CLASSIC NORTH COAST DAY OFF<\/strong>
\nHis ideal day off? Pure North Coast. A 10km run, followed by a beer at Hops, and then a game of bowls at Umhlali Country Club, where he\u2019s now a member. He started playing with his parents about four years ago, mostly as a joke.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then I had quite a natural talent for it. I don\u2019t really play sports, so that became my sport,\u201d he laughs. \u201cAnd I like hanging out with old people.\u201d<\/p>\n

THE COMEDIAN WHO TELLS THE TRUTH<\/strong>
\nPeople are often surprised to learn about his love of bowls or that he finished the Comrades Marathon.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople don\u2019t associate comedians and sports,\u201d he says. \u201cBack at school, there were the rugby jocks and the drama kids. The drama kids grew up to be comedians, and the rugby guys became the athletes.\u201d
\nAnd yet, he keeps getting asked if it\u2019s all just part of the act.
\n\u201cI did a show the other night where I spoke about the Comrades, and afterwards these two ladies asked, \u2018So did you really do the Comrades?\u2019 And I\u2019m like, yes! Just because I say it in a funny way doesn\u2019t mean it didn\u2019t happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

HONEST, FUNNY, AND SOMETIMES UNCOMFORTABLE<\/strong>
\nThis tension between truth and performance is something Schalk navigates with intelligence and sensitivity.<\/p>\n

\u201cI won\u2019t share anything on stage unless I\u2019ve already gotten to a point where I can harvest the humour. Otherwise, it\u2019s just awkward,\u201d he says. \u201cMe standing and talking about my divorce for five minutes with no jokes? That would be weird.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s tried more serious material before, speaking about being bullied at school.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I realised it\u2019s not my style of comedy. I start feeling too awkward with the silences. I need the laughs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, it\u2019s this openness \u2013 whether about heartache, hobbies or running 90km \u2013 that makes his comedy feel more intimate than most.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou go further than just making people laugh,\u201d he says. \u201cYou form a bond.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"BETWEEN HERE AND EVERYWHERE<\/strong>
\nSchalk travels constantly for work, from Australia and New Zealand to Europe and beyond. But his ultimate break? Right here at home.
\nSo where does he unwind? The bush. Every time.
\n\u201cIf I had to choose between two weeks in Greece or two weeks in the bush, I\u2019d choose the bush. Hands down.\u201d<\/p>\n

In another life, he reckons he might have been a game ranger.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d love to take guests out, share that love. The same way I love being a tour guide for friends in Ballito, I\u2019d love to do that in the bush.\u201d<\/p>\n

WHAT YOU SEE IS <\/strong>
\nWHAT YOU GET<\/strong>
\n\u201cThere\u2019s no serious Schalk off stage and funny Schalk on,\u201d he says. \u201cI don\u2019t speak in punchlines in real life, obviously, but it\u2019s all still me. I find it special to really open up to my audience. You give them more than generic jokes, and they give something back.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for Ballito?<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know if this is going to be my forever,\u201d he says, \u201cbut I will definitely be here for the foreseeable future.\u201d
\nFor now, Schalk\u2019s story continues on the North Coast \u2013 between bowls and bush breaks, dogs and day runs, comedy and quiet. Not quite where he thought he\u2019d end up, but exactly where he needs to be.<\/p>\n

\nSchalk shares his favourite spots:<\/p>\n

Coffee fix: <\/strong>I love the Wimpy at Lifestyle Centre (not a coffee snob at all). But my favorite coffee spot is a home made cup of coffee on my deck looking at that typical Ballito view: jungle and ocean.<\/p>\n

Foodie favourite: <\/strong>Salt Rock Hotel or Mfino in Sheffield. Mfino is the best kept secret of our area, and that makes me sad. Eugene\u2019s food is next level.<\/p>\n

Best sundowner spot: <\/strong>I\u2019m a sucker for an ice cold Castle Tank at Hops. You really feel like a Ballito local there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
