Thanks to this growing trend, here are some wonderful almost forgotten varieties to be rediscovered.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>What comes to mind when thinking about garden cut flowers? Probably Chrysanthemums, carnations, dahlias, snapdragons, and zinnias. All are lovely, long lasting and easy to grow, but what about something different?<\/p>\n<p>The new Kirchhoffs cut flower collection from seed features updated and improved versions of heirloom varieties like Pixie Bells (Molucella), \u2018Queen Anne\u2019s lace flower), and Craspedia \u2018Billy Button.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>There is also a multicoloured mix of Achillea (better known as yarrow), Cosmos \u2018Seashells\u2019 that looks nothing like our roadside cosmos, double flowering Marigold \u2018Sugar and Spice\u2019 and lollypop like Zinnias.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1406262\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1406262\" style=\"width: 744px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1406262\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2025\/08\/Alice-Coetzee-29-08-2925-gardening-cut-flowers-photo-2-744x551.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"744\" height=\"551\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1406262\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Queen Anne\u2019s Lace flower.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Good to know.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Besides being cut flowers, these varieties are easy to grow garden perennials that will add height, texture, colour and a quirky charm to the garden.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Taller flowers that can be grown towards the back of a bed are \u2018Queen Anne\u2019s Lace\u2019 (1.2m), Centaurea \u2018The Bride\u2019 (1m), and Cosmos Seashells (1.2m).<\/li>\n<li>Medium high flowers for filling the centre of a bed or massed meadow style are Achillea \u2018Fruit Bowl\u2019 (75 cm), Craspedia \u2018Billy Button\u2019 (60 to 90cm), Gomphrena \u2018Lavender Lady\u2019 (60 \u2013 90 cm) and Trachymene \u2018Lace White\u2019 (65 cm).<\/li>\n<li>Real novelties are Molucella \u2018Bells of Ireland\u2019 (75 cm) and Sunflower \u2018Teddy Bear\u2019 (60 \u2013 90cm).<\/li>\n<li>Marigold \u2018Sugar and Spice\u2019 which has large, double carnation type creamy yellow flowers that mature to white and Zinnia \u2018Jazzy Mixed\u2019 are compact bedding flowers for smaller gardens or for showing off in larger beds, while still providing blooms for the vase.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Try these.<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1406263\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1406263\" style=\"width: 744px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1406263\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2025\/08\/Alice-Coetzee-29-08-2925-gardening-cut-flowers-photo-3-744x496.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"744\" height=\"496\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1406263\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Achillea \u2018Fruit Bowl\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) \u2018Fruit Bowl\u2019 features bright colours where previously they were only available in pastels. This long lasting perennial that is drought tolerant once established. The blooms have a long vase life. As garden flowers they attract butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Queen Anne\u2019s lace\u2019 (Ammi visnaga) is a graceful and versatile perennial for summer borders. The stems grow up to 1m making them excellent for the vase or in bouquets. When sowing, mix the tiny seeds with fine sand before spreading in the final position. The flowers also attract pollinators.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1406264\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1406264\" style=\"width: 744px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1406264\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2025\/08\/Alice-Coetzee-29-08-2925-gardening-cut-flowers-photo-4-744x496.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"744\" height=\"496\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1406264\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Craspedia \u2019Billy Button\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Craspedia \u2018Billy Button\u2019 should be familiar as it is often used in flower arrangements sold through supermarkets. That\u2019s because it is an excellent fresh or dried flower and the bright yellow balls add variety to the garden.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1406265\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1406265\" style=\"width: 744px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1406265\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2025\/08\/Alice-Coetzee-29-08-2925-gardening-cut-flowers-photo-5-744x493.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"744\" height=\"493\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1406265\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gomphrena \u2018Lavender Lady\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Gomphrena \u2018Lavender Lady\u2019 is one of those everlasting plants that flowers throughout summer. Its heat and drought tolerant and shows up best if mass planted. It can be used fresh or dried, for the vase and for flower crowns on Garden Day in October. Pollinators love it too!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1406266\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1406266\" style=\"width: 744px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1406266\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2025\/08\/Alice-Coetzee-29-08-2925-gardening-cut-flowers-photo-6-744x496.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"744\" height=\"496\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1406266\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Blue Lace Flower.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018Blue Lace Flower\u2019 (Trachymene) as well as \u2018White Lace\u2019 blooms throughout summer, attracting honeybees and other pollinators. The dainty, star shaped flowers have a fresh scent. An excellent garden flower that produces flowers on slender pickable stems for mixed arrangements.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1406267\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1406267\" style=\"width: 744px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1406267\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2025\/08\/Alice-Coetzee-29-08-2925-gardening-cut-flowers-photo-7-744x1119.jpe\" alt=\"\" width=\"744\" height=\"1119\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1406267\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sunflower Teddy Bear.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sunflower (Helianthus) \u2018Teddy Bear\u2019 is aptly named for its fluffy, cuddly looking blooms and the kids love them. It\u2019s also a good cut flower. The final height depends on the container it is grown in. The smaller the container the smaller the plant.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1406268\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1406268\" style=\"width: 744px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1406268\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2025\/08\/Alice-Coetzee-29-08-2925-gardening-cut-flowers-photo-8-744x1116.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"744\" height=\"1116\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1406268\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Molucella \u2019Pixie Bells\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018Pixie Bells\u2019 (Molucella) is an easy to grow cut flower with an ancient lineage. It has been cultivated since 1570 when it was introduced from Syria. With its apple-green bells enclosing tiny white flowers, it does double duty as an unusual foliage plant for the garden as well as in arrangements. \u2018Pixie Bells\u2019 has shorter, sturdier stems than the original variety and won\u2019t fall over.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1406269\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1406269\" style=\"width: 744px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1406269\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2025\/08\/Alice-Coetzee-29-08-2925-gardening-cut-flowers-photo-9-744x1120.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"744\" height=\"1120\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1406269\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zinnia Jazzy Mixed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Zinnia \u2018Jazzy Mixed\u2019 is a crazy quilt mix of single and double blooms on compact, highly productive plants. This cut-and-come-again flower yields multiple blooms from spring to autumn. The long lasting blooms stay fresh on the plants as well as in the vase.
