Perched on a hill in Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate, this breathtaking home by Dos Reis Design captures the essence of modern Mediterranean living – a warm, light-filled sanctuary that reflects both the artistry and heart of its creators.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\"\"After nearly a decade of designing dream homes for others, the team behind Dos Reis Design finally had the chance to bring their own vision to life. Their latest project, aptly named The Lighthouse on the Hill, is not only their family home but also a living testament to their design philosophy – where light, form and feeling converge in perfect harmony. Drawing inspiration from modern Mediterranean architecture and the organic beauty of the North Coast, this space embodies what it means to live beautifully, intentionally and in connection with nature.<\/p>\n

Can you tell us about your vision for this space?<\/strong>
\nThis project was incredibly close to home, both literally and figuratively. The vision was to build a sanctuary that reflected who we are as designers and as a family.
\nArchitecturally and aesthetically, the home draws inspiration from the modern Mediterranean style – a blend of clean, contemporary lines\u00a0often found along the North Coast, softened by organic curves and a sense of warmth reminiscent of coastal European design.
\nConceptually, we envisioned a literal “light house” nestled on the hill in Zululami – a home that radiates light, both in form and feeling. It was designed to be more than a dwelling; it’s a living piece of art that offers inspiration and solace to our family, friends, clients and anyone who steps inside.<\/p>\n

\"\"What was your inspiration for this project?<\/strong>
\nAs a trend-forward design studio, our inspiration was deeply rooted in the evolving world of interiors. We were drawn to organic curves, natural light, earthy textures, and the growing emphasis on biophilic design. The rise of warm minimalism – spaces that feel intentional yet inviting – resonated with us, as did the seamless integration of smart technology and multifunctional living areas.<\/p>\n

\"\"How would you describe the overall style of the home?<\/strong>
\nThe home embodies a modern Mediterranean aesthetic, a harmonious blend of minimalism and warmth. It’s defined by soft organic forms, neutral tones and natural textures, balanced with modern architectural detailing.<\/p>\n

Are there any standout or signature elements that you are particularly proud of?<\/strong>
\nSome standout features include the way form creates flow, drawing the eye naturally toward the sweeping ocean and greenbelt views. The open-plan kitchen – complete with an integrated dining table – was a lifelong dream and reflects an emerging trend in modern kitchen design.
\nAnother element we’re incredibly proud of is the bar, crafted from natural stone. Staying true to our theme of organic design, we wanted it to feel as though it had emerged straight from the earth. The marble top was selected for its captivating blue and terracotta hues, adding depth and character to the space. We introduced a layered, “raw-edge” detail to give it a sculptural, hand-hewn quality, an embodiment of nature’s imperfect beauty.<\/p>\n

\"\"The courtyard, around which the home is built, is another signature element. It provides shelter from the ocean winds while creating a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living. We carried the home’s organic aesthetic into the landscaping, with pebble-shaped stepping stones, an organically shaped warm-toned swimming pool, tropical planting and a gas firepit perfect for enjoying pizzas straight from the wood-fired oven.<\/p>\n

We’re also particularly proud of the lighting and bulkhead design. The interplay of soft mood lighting and LED strips accentuates the home’s gentle curves while enhancing its welcoming ambiance. At the double-volume entrance, a custom pendant light installation inspired by the pattern of a lily pad adds a sculptural, nature-inspired focal point, an ode to biophilic design.<\/p>\n

\"\"How did you choose the colour palette?<\/strong>
\nWe’ve always gravitated toward neutral, nature-inspired palettes. We leaned into soft, warm undertones – creamy beiges, sandy taupes and gentle whites – to evoke a sense of serenity. The palette serves as a calming canvas that allows texture, form and natural light to take centre stage.<\/p>\n

\"\"Are there any design trends you love right now that appear in this project?<\/strong>
\nAbsolutely. The design embodies several of 2025’s key trends: the shift from cool greys to warm, earthy tones; the embrace of biophilic elements and natural textures and the movement toward warm minimalism, where spaces feel both functional and soulful. We also incorporated organic curves and rounded furniture, which continue to play a major role in contemporary interiors.<\/p>\n

\"\"Is there anything else you’d like to add about the project?<\/strong>
\nThis home represents a full-circle moment for us, it’s a reflection of everything we’ve learned and loved through years of design experience. It celebrates light, form and connection and reminds us that great design is not just about aesthetics, it’s about creating spaces that feel personal.
