Lush container plants on the patio link the garden to the house, and that\u2019s where begonias come in, especially the perennial varieties.<\/p>\n<p>Begonias thrive in pots, and the shape, texture and colour of their varied leaves as well as their profusion of flowers make them great choice for the patio.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s to like <\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20391\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20391\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20391 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Alice-Coetzee-07-11-2025-gardening-patio-flowers-photo-2-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20391\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Begonia \u2018Bossa Nova\u2019 Ivory.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Begonias are easy to grow plants that need minimal care. They are not water guzzlers and only need watering when the top 5cm of soil feels dry. Make sure the pots drain well otherwise the roots will rot. Plants in hanging baskets will need watering more often than those in pots.<\/p>\n<p>Most begonias are naturally bushy plants that don\u2019t need pinching and they never stop flowering without having to be deadheaded.\u00a0 They will benefit from a once or twice a month feed with a liquid fertiliser.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Where to display them:<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20392\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20392\" style=\"width: 267px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20392 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Alice-Coetzee-07-11-2025-gardening-patio-flowers-photo-3-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20392\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Begonia \u2018Big\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Begonias like plenty of bright light but not direct sun on their leaves, except the Dragon Wing, Baby Wing and Sun Dancer begonias that can take some morning sun.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Begonia Dragon Wing<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20393\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20393\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20393 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Alice-Coetzee-07-11-2025-gardening-patio-flowers-photo-4-400x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"297\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20393\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Begonia \u2018Dragon Wing\u2019 White.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These are the most theatrical and showiest of the perennial begonias. The \u00a0scarlet, clear pink\u00a0 or white blooms are slightly pendulous and combine with the glossy green angel-wing leaves to make a bold statement. The lush, vigorous plants flower prolifically, reaching a height of 60 to 80 cm and spread of 40 to 45 cm. For a spectacular patio feature display\u00a0 Begonia Dragon Wing with scarlet and golden coleus and red impatiens.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20394\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20394\" style=\"width: 267px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20394 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Alice-Coetzee-07-11-2025-gardening-patio-flowers-photo-5-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20394\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Begonia \u2018Baby Wing\u2019 mixed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Baby Wing may work better in a smaller space, as it is a neat, mounded plant, 30cm high and wide, with smaller Dragon Wing type leaves. However, it flowers just as impressively and is extremely heat tolerant and stands up to stressful conditions, making it ideal for containers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Begonia \u2018Hula\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20395\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20395\" style=\"width: 378px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20395 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Alice-Coetzee-07-11-2025-gardening-patio-flowers-photo-6-378x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"378\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20395\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Begonia \u2018Hula\u2019 red.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018Hula\u2019 is the first of its kind spreading begonia. The trailing habit and many small flowers that cover the plant give it a great colour impact when planted in hanging baskets and containers. There is nothing showier than flowers spilling over the edge of a container or basket. The flower colours are blush, pink, red, red-white bicolour and white.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Begonia Bossa Nova<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20396\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20396\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20396 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Alice-Coetzee-07-11-2025-gardening-patio-flowers-photo-7-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20396\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Begonia \u2018Bossa Nova\u2019 pink.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Especially bred for hanging baskets, Begonia \u2018Bossa Nova\u2019 is a Boliviensis begonia that has lantern-like flowers in vivid colours, and green or bronze leaves. The plants overflow hanging baskets and the large flowers drop off cleanly when they are over. Plants flower all summer long and do best in a semi-shaded position. Water daily when the heat is on. It is a good choice for any climate, especially in warm climates where other begonias have failed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Begonia Sun Dancer <\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20397\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20397\" style=\"width: 286px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20397 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Alice-Coetzee-07-11-2025-gardening-patio-flowers-photo-8-286x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20397\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Begonia \u2018Sun Dancer\u2019 pink-white picotee.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This compact, slightly spreading begonia stands out for its large double blooms that are larger than other begonia varieties. It makes a gorgeous hanging basket, as blooms can range in diameter from 5 -13cm. The brightly coloured blooms include apricot, scarlet-orange, a vivid red and a very pretty white-pink picotee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuberous begonias<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20398\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20398\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20398 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Alice-Coetzee-07-11-2025-gardening-patio-flowers-photo-9-400x259.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"259\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20398\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tuberous begonia \u2018 Amerihybrid\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tuberous begonias with their compact growth, large glossy leaves and even larger flowers are always a good d\u00e9cor choice for patios and indoors.
