For Ballito entrepreneur Christian Mkhize, the biggest lessons in life didn\u2019t come from boardrooms. They came from community, fatherhood and the people who showed up when it mattered most.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

From humble beginnings to international boardrooms, Christian\u2019s story has been shaped by hard work, determination and a willingness to take chances when opportunities came his way. Today, he\u2019s a dedicated husband to Kirstie, dad to his boys Paddy and Charlie, and the founder of two growing businesses, but the road to building that life was far from conventional.<\/p>\n

Born in Ntuzuma and raised partly in Umlazi, Christian moved to Westville at ten years old without speaking English. Suddenly, language became the difference between fitting in and feeling left behind.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember standing in class wishing I could speak like everyone else,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019d practise in the mirror at home.\u201d<\/p>\n

A teacher recognised his potential early and took him under her wing. What could have become a setback instead became fuel.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hated feeling behind,\u201d he says. \u201cThat discomfort pushed me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>LESSONS BEYOND THE CLASSROOM<\/strong>
\nSport became another turning point. Rugby gave him structure, confidence and community, first in his neighbourhood and later at Westville Boys\u2019 High School, where he played first-team rugby and stepped into leadership roles.<\/p>\n

But while things were progressing at school, life at home changed dramatically after his father suffered a severe head injury in a car accident. Stability disappeared almost overnight.<\/p>\n

In that season, community stepped in. One teammate\u2019s family welcomed Christian into their home, giving him support, routine and a sense of belonging during a difficult chapter.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat changed everything for me,\u201d he says. \u201cIt showed me the power of people showing up for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those experiences would quietly shape the way he approached life, business and eventually fatherhood.<\/p>\n

Having experienced the impact of mentors, teachers and families who stepped in during difficult seasons, Christian is intentional about creating that same sense of stability and support for his own children.<\/p>\n

FROM REJECTION TO OPPORTUNITY<\/strong>
\nAfter studying media and communication at university, Christian got his first taste of the corporate world through a youth camp presentation that unexpectedly opened the door to an exposure opportunity at Unilever.<\/p>\n

But his first attempt to join the company\u2019s graduate programme ended in rejection.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really thought I\u2019d get in,\u201d he says. \u201cThat one hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, he joined an advertising agency, learning the fast-paced world of branding and communication from the ground up. Then, through a network of relationships and recommendations, Unilever came calling again.<\/p>\n

This time, the answer was yes.<\/p>\n

Within 18 months, he moved into management before relocating to Singapore, where he worked across Southeast Asia and Australasia.<\/p>\n

\u201cSingapore completely expanded my world,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

It also introduced him to his future wife, Kirstie.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>BUILDING A LIFE IN BALLITO<\/strong>
\nIn 2014, the couple returned to South Africa and settled in Ballito, where they\u2019ve built their life ever since.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt just felt like home,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Today, life revolves around family rhythms \u2013 school drop-offs, beach days, coffee runs and being present for the quieter moments with Paddy and Charlie.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecoming a dad changed my perspective on success,\u201d Christian says. \u201cIt made me think less about titles and more about presence, consistency and the kind of example I\u2019m setting every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Christian is the founder of Mbuso We2, a food ingredient business specialising in vitamin premixes used in food fortification, as well as Collab Caf\u00e9, a coffee venture operating through co-working spaces, events and mobile activations across the North Coast and beyond.<\/p>\n

Both businesses reflect the same qualities that have defined his story from the beginning: adaptability, connection and a willingness to embrace opportunity.<\/p>\n

These days, success looks different. Less corporate milestones, more being present \u2013 at rugby practice, around the dinner table or during early mornings with his boys.<\/p>\n

Looking back, Christian believes success rarely happens in isolation.<\/p>\n

\u201cRelationships are everything,\u201d he says. \u201cMore than anything else, that\u2019s what shapes your path.\u201d<\/p>\n
