Villa Sangara at Zimbali Lakes is a study in contrast and cohesion.<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Set on an exceptionally steep site, the home resolves into a calm, contemporary residence that balances bold architectural gestures with soft, organic interiors. Designed by the team at Craft of Architecture and brought to life with bespoke interiors by Oak Corner Interiors, it shows how constraint can become a powerful design driver.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>A challenging site that shaped the concept<\/strong>
\nAccording to Jana Burger from Craft of Architecture, the steep site was initially considered difficult to develop, but instead of working against it, the team used it as the foundation for the entire concept. Rather than building up, the house is carved into the slope, stepping down across three levels. This embeds the structure into the landscape, unlocking privacy, views and stability. Extensive engineering, including piling and deep retaining structures, made this possible.<\/p>\n

Angles, lines and a strong architectural language<\/strong>
\nA defining feature is its geometric clarity. The site\u2019s strong angles informed the design, reflected in crisp slab edges, chamfered details and directional lines that guide movement through the home.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Externally, the architecture is sharp and expressive, with vertical elements and off-shutter concrete adding rhythm and texture. Internally, the language softens, shifting towards a warmer, more inviting atmosphere.<\/p>\n

Rather than a stark monochrome palette, bone-toned finishes and warm neutrals create calm, contemporary interiors that avoid feeling cold or overly minimal.<\/p>\n

Light, privacy and layered living<\/strong>
\nDespite its dense programme, Villa Sangara feels open and connected. Strategic planning and the use of light allow daylight to penetrate deep into the lower levels, transforming them into atmospheric, usable spaces.<\/p>\n

Privacy was equally critical. Openings, screens and vertical elements are carefully positioned to manage views. From the street, the home reads as a single storey, but internally it unfolds into layered, private spaces \u2013 including a secluded master suite within the landscape.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Living, entertaining and evolving use<\/strong>
\nOriginally conceived as a developer showcase, the brief evolved when the owner chose to live in the home. Spaces were adapted for family life and entertaining, with the kitchen and braai area becoming central social hubs.
\nOutdoor areas, including a compact plunge pool and entertainment zone, were designed for maximum usability within a tight footprint. Flexibility became key \u2013 the home functions as a residence, guest space and occasional hospitality setting.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Interior response: <\/strong>warmth within structure<\/strong>
\nOak Corner Interiors responded to the strong architectural framework with softness and tactility. Rounded forms, natural timber tones and layered textures temper the home\u2019s structural precision.<\/p>\n

Materials such as iroko and white oak introduce warmth against the concrete and stone, creating an interior that feels integrated rather than imposed \u2013 a natural continuation of the architecture.<\/p>\n
