{"id":664,"date":"2019-02-18T22:34:02","date_gmt":"2019-02-18T20:34:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ballitoumhlanga.getitmagazine.co.za\/?p=664"},"modified":"2024-05-28T11:30:15","modified_gmt":"2024-05-28T09:30:15","slug":"paella-love","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/blog\/2019\/02\/18\/paella-love\/","title":{"rendered":"Read the love story behind the owners of Perfect Paella&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">W<\/span><span class=\"s1\">hen they met and fell in love in Cape town six years ago, Jos\u00e9 and Lisa had no idea that their relationship would result in them running a very successful company together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The truth is, their business, Perfect Paella, came about through a twist of fate while the couple were preparing for their wedding. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Like a true whirlwind love story, Spanish-born Jos\u00e9 proposed to Lisa in a castle in Spain just three months after they first met in 2012. They planned to get married in February 2013, but Lisa\u2019s mother, who lived in Botswana, fell very ill and was given just two weeks to live. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWhen we were planning our wedding, we came up with the idea of giving our guests each a gift from Jose\u2019s home country. So, we imported mini paella pans for everyone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">But instead of having the big, fairy tale wedding they had planned, the couple decided to have a small, intimate ceremony at Lisa\u2019s mother\u2019s bedside in the St Vincent Palotti hospital in Cape Town.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt was incredibly special sharing it with her. But when we got home, we had a house full of paella pans that we didn\u2019t know what to do with. I just wanted to get rid of them, so we decided to sell them on Gumtree. We sold them all in three days.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Realising they were onto something and had discovered a gap in the market, Lisa and Jos\u00e9 took the money they had saved for their honeymoon and bought 1000 paella pans instead. \u201cWe had them all over our house. We were using them as coffee tables and storing them under beds,\u201d laughs Lisa. But again, they sold out in just a few days. Things just grew from there and suddenly their paella pan business, which they were running out of their garage, was booming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cNo one was selling them at that time and instead of marketing them just as paella pans, we focussed on the fact that they are actually the most versatile pans you can own.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">As things developed and grew, Jos\u00e9 started receiving requests to do paella cooking demonstrations and private events and he was invited to cook for a group of 300 people at the Spanish embassy in Johannesburg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-666 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/40926084_l.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"7360\" height=\"4912\" srcset=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/40926084_l.jpg 7360w, https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/40926084_l-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/40926084_l-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/40926084_l-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/40926084_l-696x465.jpg 696w, https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/40926084_l-1068x713.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/40926084_l-629x420.jpg 629w, https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/ballito-umhlanga\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/40926084_l-1920x1281.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 7360px) 100vw, 7360px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Soon they were selling other Spanish cookware and had to move the business to a warehouse. Jos\u00e9 was doing cooking classes, team building events and demonstrations all over Cape Town and Johannesburg and he was even invited to be a celebrity chef at the Good Food &amp; Wine show alongside famous chefs like Matt Preston and Jenny Morris. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cIt was all very surreal,\u201d says Lisa, \u201cespecially because Jos\u00e9 is not a trained chef and, in fact, the first time he cooked me a meal, a Spanish omelette, he nearly burnt the kitchen down!\u201d Although he is a self-taught chef, Jos\u00e9 believes his talent comes from his mother, who is an excellent Spanish cook. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">After living in Johannesburg and then Spain, Jos\u00e9 and Lisa decided to move to Ballito, where they have lived for just three months. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cWe love the lifestyle here and have already had so much support. We\u2019ve done a number of events and classes and have had great interest in our business,\u201d says Lisa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Things you didn\u2019t know about paella . . .\u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">The word \u2018paella\u2019 actually means pan. It\u2019s a round pan with two handles that is slightly concave in the centre. Perfect Paella pans can be used directly over it straight on the fire and can be used in the oven.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">The yellow colour you see in paella comes from a food colouring that is added in Spain. In SA a lot of people use turmeric, which can affect the flavour. Jos\u00e9 rather uses saffron imported from Spain to get that rich colour. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Many people think that traditional Spanish food is spicy. It\u2019s not at all. Proper Spanish paella from Valencia is actually very bland and contains chicken, rabbit and snails! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Jos\u00e9 says the secret to a good paella is to cook all the ingredients individually before throwing them all together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">The base of a good paella starts with onion, garlic and tomato (called Sofrito). <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Paella doesn\u2019t have to be a seafood dish. Jos\u00e9 even one made a boerewors paella.
