This has been a year of change. As women we have had to step up to the plate and embrace the new age of business as well as the role of the leading lady. Women on the Move, with the support of Vodacom, FNB and Seda is bringing amazing women of Bloemfontein to the forefront. These super ladies tell us what it means to be a 21st Century woman.

Mamello Selamolela

Mamello Selamolela

Communication is the name of the game for this Managing Executive of Vodacom in the Free State and the Northern Cape. As an industry leader, Mamello Selamolela has cultivated a team of capable and passionate people in a time when telecommunications have become key in connecting with loved ones.

She expresses that the word woman represents power that is balanced, nurturing and uplifting at the same time. This she tries to embody. “My best decision was to develop a team of capable, passionate people and give them room to excel. We hire slowly and carefully to make sure that we select the very best people for our team,” says Mamello.

The executive is also a University of Cape Town alumna and describes her years studying there as some of the best in her life. “I had the privilege of relocating to Cape Town to study at UCT, where I spent six amazing years.”

Mamello describes Vodacom as differentiated from the competition by their commitment to being a purpose-led business, the purpose being to connect for a better future. “I love the fact that my work touches and transforms people’s lives every day. Our services help people to connect with each other, connect to opportunities and connect to the world. We have seen this especially now during the Covid-19 pandemic, where communication and connectivity have been so vital for people, businesses and governments.”

Even as an industry leader Mamello is spiritually driven, having made the decision to give her life to Jesus, while the women who have shaped her life are still some of the ones she looks up to. “So many incredible women inspire me. Some are close to home, like my mother and grandmother, while others are further away but have inspired me and millions of women across the world. I admire many women for their tenacity, strength, compassion, leadership, authenticity and commitment to excellence.”

Lorraine Mc Anda

Lorraine Mc Anda

Lorraine Mc Anda has been working in the banking industry for more than 19 years. She has 10 years’ experience in managing and leading teams across multiple sectors. As the Sales Head of the FNB Commercial Free State Central team, she is committed to helping clients solve their business problems through innovative solutions.

“FNB is committed to putting our clients first and our unique value proposition distinguishes us from our competitors. We are focused on helping our clients solve their business problems and we look for innovative solutions that our customers never thought possible in order to assist them to start, run and grow their businesses. Our aim is to support our female clients with their growth, celebrate their successes and partner with them in order to have an influence on the community within which they operate.”

Lorraine was born in Namibia before moving to Kathu in the Northern Cape where she completed high school. “My heart always yearns for Namibia and my family and I visit as often as possible,” she says. It’s no surprise that her source of inspiration comes from home. “My mother is my biggest inspiration and always will be, I suppose. She has shown me what a woman is capable of once pushed to their limits. She survived so many obstacles but the biggest obstacle she conquered was cancer. Through sheer power and the will to survive, she fought until her last moments with us. That’s what I want to accomplish every day with every battle I face… in life and work.”

Her advice to young businesswomen is to believe in themselves and know their strengths and weaknesses. “You have to believe in yourself before anyone else will. Only we ourselves know what our limits are and how far we can push ourselves. If we don’t believe, we will never reach the impossible even if everyone else says we can’t.”

Busi Ntsele

Busi Ntsele

Busi Ntsele is as multitalented as she is glamorous. As the force behind local luxury designer brand, Ruby Red, she empowers women to look their best. However, her sense of spirituality radiates above all else and she helps other women to fulfil their own path of self-empowerment.

She describes herself as a businesswoman, spiritual and energy healer, and life coach. As a Jo’burg native, it was during her studies at the University of the Free State that she made Bloemfontein her home. “I was born and raised in Gauteng and moved to the Free State to pursue my studies in accountancy at the University of the Free State. Teaching has always been my calling and based on my qualifications in accounting, I embarked on a journey of self-empowerment and empowerment of others in healing their ‘money wounds’,” Busi reflects.

The wife and mom of three girls is also a perfectionist, which can be seen in all her business endeavours. “The worst decision I’ve ever made, was to start a business that I knew nothing about while depending on others. I’m a perfectionist; you can see it in my everyday life as well as the way I run my businesses. I don’t stop until I get something done.

“But the best decision I’ve ever made, was to accept and acknowledge my calling allowing my personality to serve the energy of my soul,” she says.

Busi’s life and business decisions are God-driven as she believes that His presence in her ventures is the key to success. “I’m inspired by women both young and old who I know and see every day as well as those I read about or see on TV. These are the kind of women who understand the reason for their existence and strive to fulfil their purpose in life while proving that anything is possible if you’re determined to achieve it.”

Keamogetswe Molebatsi

Keamogetswe Molebatsi

Keamogetswe Molebatsi loves working at one of the most iconic brands in the world. As Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa’s District Manager for the Goldfields area, including Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom, Welkom, Bloemhof and Christiana, she can apply multiple skills to get the job done.

“There are many things that I love about what I do. One of them is being part of something larger that makes a difference. The environment I work in is dynamic and changes continuously. Every day is different and what you know today, may not be relevant tomorrow. So it requires you to apply multiple skill sets in order to thrive. I simply love my job because it challenges me in different ways every day.”

She considers affording herself the opportunity to return to studying full time as the best decision she’s made so far. She takes every choice in life as a learning curve for the future. “The best decision I ever made, was to go back to full-time studies. I pursued my studies of choice after working in the banking industry for five years. That was many moons ago. I live by the belief that there are no bad decisions in life, only opportunities to learn from. To master the art of self-forgiveness propels us to become better human beings,” Keamogetswe shares.

As a career woman she believes that women have their own strengths that are effective in business and the workspace. “To me, being a woman means being able to be assertive and powerful, yet compassionate. It means always striving to accomplish your goals, irrespective of the challenges or setbacks you may face along the way. Young businesswomen shouldn’t try to be like men and shouldn’t be afraid to fail because failure is an opportunity to learn.”

Nosihle Mthethwa

Nosihle Mthethwa

Nosihle Mthethwa is inspired by a wide variety of women; from author and poet Maya Angelou, to Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern. Coming from KwaZulu-Natal she grew up wanting to become a teacher but it was her love of books that opened her up to a wider world of opportunity.

Today she is Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa’s District Manager for the North West area and responsible for the sales and distribution operations of the area. This is a job that requires leadership, driving profitable growth while managing costs and compliance to the various regulatory and statutory requirements.

“I love seeing people grow and reach their full potential in whatever role they are in. This job gives me a great platform to serve that purpose. Also, I have 100% faith in the integrity and strategic direction of the senior leadership of my organisation and for me that makes all the difference. It makes it easier to be passionate about the business and to be committed to achieving the results.”

Nosihle expresses that she has learnt important lessons in leadership and business from her family while growing up. These have shaped her into the woman that she is today, especially in situations that others may shy away from. “I am a rural girl and was raised by my grandparents. My grandfather was a school principal and a tribal leader. I learned a lot about leadership from watching him. There were three small businesses at home and all of them were run by the women in the family. Growing up, I was aware of the spaces that the women were traditionally not encouraged to enter. However, I also knew that it was not a reason to stop me from pursuing my goals.”

Reading is still a big part of her life and she enjoys books on African fiction as well as tales that let her imagination wonder. “I love African fiction and stories that draw you in so that after a while you cannot remember whether it was a book or movie.”

Elmarie van Coller

Elmarie vasn Coller

Growing up, Elmarie van Coller dreamt of becoming a hairdresser but her life took a different route, which led to the establishment of her own real estate company. However, she still believes in the power of feminine abilities, which no doubt, has been part of her success.

“Women are special because they love to accomplish things and they love to work together in order to get what they want. Women have come so far in this world – that is what makes them even more special.”

As the director of Elmarie van Coller Properties, this dynamic woman’s purpose is to help people find the home of their dreams. She lives by the Word of God and radiates positivity in all she does. “I love to work with people and always try my best to bring joy to other people’s lives by helping them to find their dream house. I refuse to be negative. I have a very positive mind-set. So I don’t look at the economy or negative things. I focus on the positive as I’m convinced that every negative thing always has a positive side,” Elmarie says.

The mother of two girls and wife to a pharmacist spent her younger years on a farm in Viljoenskroon before going to the university in Potchefstroom. It’s no surprise that her inspiration is down to earth as well as the way she chooses to spend her downtime. “I get my inspiration from my late grandmother and mother. They were hardworking and energetic women who taught me to never give up. When I take time out for myself, I go to my miniature horses and cuddle them. I also enjoy spring cleaning my house; it’s very therapeutic for me.”

The businesswoman has three tips for young women that including keeping faith, believing in themselves and maintaining a positive mind set. “Keep your eyes on Jesus and wait for the voice of the Holy Spirit. Never think you are too young to achieve your goals and dreams. Also, have a positive mind-set and purpose; press on, even in tough times.”

Khabonina Manese

Khabonina Manese

To be a woman means a lot of things today, but to Khabonina Manese, founder of Khabo Designs (KD), it means having the freedom to be anything she wants to be. The young entrepreneur believes in doing the best with what you have in order to reach for your dreams.

“If you can’t stop thinking about your dream, start where you are with what you have and take the first step.”  This advice comes from the real life experience as Khabonina made the decision to pursue her path in design. “The best decision I’ve made so far was to give my vision the full attention it deserves; by not being a 9 to 5 employee.” KD is a business in the design industry that provides graphic, multimedia and website design services (www.khabodesigns.co.za.).

“My love for art and design while growing up planted the seed that led me to pursue what I’m passionate about. The fact that I can create what I can see in my mind, is magical. It doesn’t take a lot from me because I enjoy designing and tapping into my creative mind”, explains Khabonina. The professionalism of her designs and minimalist design style reflects her personality. Khabo Designs delivers designs with purpose, meaning and always strives for excellence.

The driven businesswoman is also a student pursuing a Master’s degree of Visual Arts in Multimedia but a busy schedule also calls for some downtime which Khabonina enjoys as a form of self-care. “Taking time for yourself is important for your health and it’s part of self-care. I prefer to be in quiet spaces, either journaling, reading or doing a beauty-routine like a face mask.”

Candy Smith

Candy Smith

For businesswoman and fashion powerhouse Candy Smith, being a 21st Century woman means being strong, bold and courageous, yet caring and concerned about those around her. Life had humble beginnings in Bronville, Welkom for the now wife and mother who has gone on to starting several businesses in Bloemfontein, including Free State Fashion Week.

After working in the corporate world for a few years, Candy took the path of her passion and has not turned back since. “I love what I do because I am following my passion and my God-given talent.  Therefore, I live my dream daily, doing what I love most. For the longest time of my life I have been working in corporate and have learned so much; I believe it’s important to somehow follow your passion,” she says

As the owner of several successful companies, including Free State Fashion Week and Free State Fashion Hub (an accredited fashion design institute), her flair for style is undeniable. However, Candy’s latest venture, Tammy Taylor Nails Bloemfontein, has taken glam to another level. She is also involved in the tourism industry as the owner of guesthouses and a travel agency. “I think what makes the business we offer different is our focus on customer service excellence and making each one of them feel special.”

When she isn’t taking on the world, Candy enjoys a quiet and calm life away from her demanding schedule. She explained that what keeps her inspired are the women who continue to pursue their passions despite the odds. “Women who persist in in all areas of their lives, women who stand up and support one another, and definitely women who stand out in the crowd and make positive changes in their own lives and the lives of others.”

The businesswoman gave some sound advice for other women who are business inclined. “Never give up on your dream; it doesn’t matter where you come from, always persist until you succeed. First work hard and when you start seeing direction in your finances and business, then work smarter. Lastly, always keep your eye on your vision and never deviate from it to please others.”

I was appointed regional sales manager for OFM North West in 2018 and as OFM Sales Manager in December 2019. This month it will be exactly 14 years of dedication to this incredible brand and business – what a privilege!”

“Women are the game changers of the world. They are mothers, ladies, influencers and caretakers of many, yet still somehow, the words magical, mysterious and fascinating also come to mind. I think women are much more powerful than they believe.”

A wife and also mother of three expressed that radio has a prominent space in the media industry. “What a powerful medium. Every day, every campaign, every client and every result is different. We get to deal with all sorts of industries and businesses. There is never a dull moment!”

“Radio is always on. It’s free to listen to and is part of everybody’s daily routine. It’s a companion and a friend. It’s direct and immediate. OFM changes the lives of people! We influence, motivate and inform listeners and we grow business for those who advertise with us. It really is the best job in the world,” she added.

Anchen is inspired by the go-getters and women who are persistent in achieving their goals. “These are people who want to get the job done and refuse to fail, but choose to rather get up and try again.”

Lindi Mtwentula

Lindi Mtwentula

Superwoman is what comes to mind when Lindi Mtwentula describes a woman of the 21st Century. The OFM Marketing Manager joined the media industry at a young age and has seen her career go from strength to strength in a fast-paced environment.

“Being a Marketing Manager for OFM entails steering and implementing the brands Public Relations; Internal Communications; Marketing Strategy/Action Plan and Corporate Social Investment Strategies. Managing all industry events, activations and advertising for OFM, means operating in a work hard, play hard environment, and I love it.  I am thankful for being part of a brand that people love and that changes people’s lives.”

“Personally being a wife, mother, friend and work professional requires you to want to master all roles, however, one needs to dig in deep and find your passion. My family always takes first place; family above all,” Lindi says.

The young wife and mother enjoys fulfilling all roles in her life, especially as she is inspired by women who make a difference in the lives of many. “I am inspired by many different women, depending on the point I am in my life. Locally I look up to Basetsana Khumalo because she has truly come a long way from beauty pageant queen to media mogul who runs several businesses, including a production company that produced popular lifestyle TV show Top Billing. Her business drive and ethic is inspiring.  Another woman would be Michelle Obama, a true humanitarian and resilient woman. She is firm believer in changing people’s lives and empowering women to achieve greatness.”

Hende-Mari Strydom

Hende-Mari Strydom

The fitness journey of Hende-Mari Strydom is a bit like a Cinderella story, but instead of the glass slippers and a fairy godmother, hers features dumbbells and some hard-core training.

Hende-Mari is the founder and owner of ZooZLifestyle, an all-encompassing fitness and lifestyle brand that allows people from all walks of life to achieve their best state of being. She is a firm believer of eliminating negative thoughts, people and lifestyle choices in order to pursue her dreams.

Apart from being a fitness fanatic changing people’s lives through fitness, Hende-Mari loves spending time with her daughter. “I enjoy good food and wine with family and close friends. Her tips to young, aspiring women who want to follow in her footsteps, is to have a goal and work very hard. Given enough personal grit and motivation, her personal inspiration transformation proves that you can achieve anything you set your mind to.

Marietjie Jacobs

Marietjie Jacobs

REMAXFIRST Bloemfontein Sales Associate, Marietjie Jacobs, is not only dedicated to making lasting connections with people but matching them with their perfect home as well. She began as a Science and Biology teacher at a number of schools, including Grey College, before branching out into real estate.

“Although teaching brought me great joy, I was later afforded an opportunity to follow my other great passion, which is finding homes for families. Selling houses is one thing but matching a person with a place where they can take refuge, grow and raise a family, is something different. Finding a first-time buyer that place that will set them up for life, is also always special,” says Marietjie.

She described women as the nurturers, carers, protectors and advisors of our society, especially in a world that can do with a woman’s touch now more than ever. It is no surprise that she finds inspiration in the female leaders of the world. “Jacinda Ardern is wonderful. She is a compassionate and empathetic leader who takes on her role as Prime Minister of New Zealand with elegance and guts… and she loves rugby!”

The gym enthusiast and runner starts off each day with an attitude of gratitude before taking on the world of real estate sales. “Always be grateful, generous, and of service to others but first and foremost, find ways to be of value to others.”

“My business is based on values. I firmly believe that people are attracted to and attractive for people with similar values. That’s why people become clients, associates and friends. Values above profit… and the rest will take care of itself.”

Salomé Reizis

Salomé Reizis

When you put together creativity and business savvy you may just end up with something out of the ordinary. This package comes in the form of Salomé Reizis, who has transformed a quiet corner and neglected spot in Navalsig into a shopping and entertainment hub in Bloemfontein.

Reizis Square is a space where people can gather to shop, be entertained and enjoy a good old fashioned chat over a delicious meal. The monthly Reizis Square Nite Market is extremely popular with Bloemfontein residents and visitors. “Since I love to be creative, I have had the opportunity to share and live out my artistic side when it comes to my businesses. I love to use my own properties as canvases. I always try my best to put Bloemfontein on the map and try to achieve this by creating a different space where even your social media photos will be on par to overseas standards.”

Her roots are firmly planted in Bloemfontein but having lived in several places while growing up, Salomé definitely has had the travel bug. Travelling all over the world has been an enriching part of her life. “I was born in Jan Kempdorp, lived in Warrenton and Blackrock, Hotazel where I started school, then Mafikeng and Postmasburg. My father was transferred to Bloemfontein and this was where I planted my roots! The best decision I’ve ever made, was to start travelling the world and enriching my life. I have travelled far and beyond and these opportunities have given me a different outlook on life,” she says.

These days you will find the creatively inclined businesswoman renovating one thing or the other, but her best advice for women is to live with passion and gratitude. “I love moving furniture in my house and I am busy renovating an old Mercedes Sprinter into a camper van. My tips for young female businesswomen are that they should be grateful for what they have and be honest with themselves. They should work hard for what they want and have passion in what they do.”

Marizanne Grunow & Lee-Anne Uys

Marizanne Grunow & Lee-Anne Uys

Galino House Rehabilitation Centre is a place of transformation for many who walk through its doors. Co-owner and addiction counsellor, Marizanne Grunow, is committed to the healing of others and works with a great team that includes social worker, Lee-Ann Uys, to help the process.

“I have a passion for being instrumental in the healing process of wounded people. I witness broken people on their day of admission. To see the same individuals on their way to wholeness after 21 days, is an exhilarating feeling,” says Marizanne.

The centre’s experienced staff provides unparalleled addiction treatment to serve each person’s unique journey towards a lifetime of recovery. “Our staff works at the core emotional level to uncover the root issues driving the addiction. At Galino House we believe that a spiritual experience is imperative to achieve lasting recovery.”

As a social worker, Lee-Ann’s approach to the rehabilitation process is very hands-on. She does initial assessments of patients who are newly admitted and assists in conducting group sessions as part of a 12-step rehabilitation programme.

“I love being an advocate for people’s growth. There is something so powerful about watching and understanding how others carve out their own paths and navigate challenging waves that could take them down in a second,” Lee-Anne says.

“For me there is no such thing as a best or worst decision. I usually take a decision after praying about it, so any decision taken at a certain time in my life was considered my best decision,” says Lee-Ann.

Marizanne, who believes that a woman is a symbol of tenacity and a carrier of wisdom, agrees. “My best decision was to have my daughter and to be able to raise her with kindness and compassion. I do not regret any wrong turns since they have shaped me for the job I am doing today.”

Prof Felicity Burt

Prof Felicity Burt

Prof Felicity Burt is an avid reader of books describing the history of pandemics, and although she knew it was possible, she never imagined that she would be part of a global pandemic affecting our daily routine. “When I was younger, I actually wanted to become a doctor or private investigator who solves mysteries – like the Famous Five or Nancy Drew! So maybe I found common ground as a medical scientist looking for viruses and trying to understand how they cause disease.” When she moved to Bloemfontein from Johannesburg, she joined the Division of Virology in a joint appointment with the UFS and the National Health Laboratory Service. With her expertise, Prof Felicity leads the University of the Free State COVID-19 Task Team.

Originally from Harare, Zimbabwe, Felicity studies viruses that are transmitted to humans by mosquitoes or ticks, and viruses that are zoonotic in origin – in other words – transmitted from animals to humans. “Based on my research outputs, I was awarded and currently hold a South African Research Chair in ‘Vector-borne and zoonotic pathogens research’, hosted by the University of the Free State.

Felicity spends ‘me time’ with her horse, Tarteeb. “It can be riding him, exercising him, grooming, anything as long as I go home smelling of horse!” Her appreciation for nature is also reflected in her skincare, involving any product brandished with the Leaping Bunny logo, “which indicates that it is internationally certified as a cruelty-free product”.

The best decision she ever made, was to have a family. “I had multiple miscarriages, so it wasn’t easy. But once I decide I want something I can be rather determined. Consequently, my husband, Dr Stephen Robinson, and I have an awesome teenage daughter currently at St Michael’s School.” Since she is a positive and optimistic person, Felicity makes the best of any situation. “Everything always looks better the next morning, anyway.”

Dr Marinkie Madiope

Dr Marinkie Madiope

Dr Maria ‘Marinkie’ Madiope, who grew up in Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria, is not simply your average professional woman. Her academic record speaks of vigilant style and resilient independence. Maria is currently the South Campus Principal of the University of the Free State. But she actually wanted to become a nurse.

“Unfortunately, or fortunately, I waited forever to get accepted into the nursing college. Luckily, one of my four sisters who were training as a teacher at Hebron Training College, applied there on my behalf. I was accepted to study a Junior Teacher’s Certificate, and that is how it all began.”

As winner of the Gender Activism: Advocacy and Promotion of Women’s Rights and 2013 Unisa Woman of the Year awards, Maria sees women as proud warriors – resilient and strong guardians of the future generations. She also contributes her own success to resilience, “and enthusiasm, confidence, focus, adaptability, and authenticity”.

Maria enjoys the opportunity to transform the Open Distance Learning Campus of the UFS to a digitised university.  “It all comes to head on the official Welcoming or Graduation Day.  I cannot express the feelings I have when welcoming students to the University of Free State to unlock their future. Or when they graduate. Especially students who have gone through very traumatic home, personal, or academic times. They still succeed, even when others have given up on them.”

Although Maria is also inspired by Maya Angelou’s poems, her mother is her greatest inspiration. “She always had a smile on her face no matter how hard she worked, and she loved everyone. Her greatest strength is her ability to let nothing and no one remove her crown: ‘Strong winds may blow, but a QUEEN will bobby pin that thang in place and persevere, because she is more than a conquerer’.”

Dr Sabeehah Vawda

Dr Sabeehah Vawda

Originally from KwaZulu-Natal, virologist Dr Sabeehah Vawda plays a significant role in the University of the Free State COVID-19 Task Team. “I find it fascinating that viruses, these super tiny organisms that aren’t even visualised with a light microscope, can do so much to the human body. And even bring the entire world to a halt!”

Sabeehah is a medical doctor who specialised in virology. After completing her postgraduate studies in Bloemfontein, she stayed on and is currently a pathologist in Virology at the National Health Laboratory Services, Universitas, and Senior Lecturer in the Division of Virology at the University of the Free State.

Being yourself, is Sabeehah’s best advice for young academic women. Also, to give your best and remain humble and respectful towards all. “In my work, I am very punctual and particular about everything I do, putting my full effort into tasks. Beginning organised and prepared helps me to stay on top of things, and I always try to find ways to work smart.”

Her mother is a tremendous inspiration. “She is always motivated, seeing the ‘bright side’ of dreary matters, and encourages both my sister and myself to do the same. My dad tragically passed away when I was 18 and my mum very courageously took on her double role, encouraged my sister and I to pursue our dreams, and with the Almighty’s mercy got us both through medical school. My mum remains my ‘go-to-person’ and we must chat every day, sometimes multiple times!”

Although being more introverted, Sabeehah uses her ‘me time’ to be with her family, or to travel and explore different cultures. Her beauty routine is the basic cleanse, moisturise, and sunscreen, because “I’ve got relatively good skin – from my mum!”

Burneline Kaars

Burneline Kaars

Burneline Kaars starts her day at 05:00 with a lemon wedge in a glass of water, oatmeal, and fresh green juice. After some quiet time in her study while her family is still asleep, she is ready for another day as Head of Organisational Development and Employee Wellness at the University of the Free State.

Although she dreamed of becoming an air hostess, she found her passion by participating in community projects as a teenager. “I went to study Social Work in Wellington but had to quit, due to financial constraints.” After many years of sacrifice and hard work, she is currently doing her dream job and is pursuing a master’s degree in Industrial Psychology to help her positively impact people’s lives.

She advises young women to choose courage over fear when chasing their dreams. “Make choices that will expand your possibilities, such as education or exposure to new things. And don’t let your life revolve around your work alone. Find other experiences outside of work to maintain a healthy work-life integration.”

Burneline is inspired by her mother who instilled deep-rooted values in six children as a single parent. “She never wanted us to settle for second best.” Despite being stuck in a destructive relationship at some point, Burneline says her best decision was to marry her now husband. “We make a great team!” The two of them are the founders of the ‘Reach Our Community Foundation’ that serves orphan and vulnerable children.

“I do not regret my past relationship with an obsessive and jealous person. We are allowed to make mistakes but should not let our mistakes define our identity. Embrace tough times and rise above anything that may bring you down or make you feel inferior.”

She credits her own success to her drive and determination to work harder, to keep going, and to try new things.

Jackie Ntshingila

Jackie Ntshingila

To Provincial Manager of the Small Enterprise Development Agency (Seda) Free State, Jackie Ntshingila, being a woman means being compassionate, loving, supporting, nurturing and selfless while still being strong and very powerful.

Seda was established through the National Small Business Amendment Act 29 of 2004 in the same year to implement the national government’s small business strategy. The agency is also mandated to design and implement a standard and common national delivery network that must uniformly apply throughout the Republic in respect of small enterprise development, integrating all government-funded small enterprise support across all tiers of government.

“Seda’s vision is to be the centre of excellence for small enterprise development in South Africa,” Jackie says.

In support of female-owned enterprises, Seda has the Women Enterprise Coaching Programme where female entrepreneurs are mentored to guide the growth of their business. “The programme assembles groups of 20 to 30 business owners under the supervision of a coach/mentor who oversees their business operations and offers solutions and guidance. The goal of the programme is to increase turnover, retain and increase jobs, improve efficiency and effectiveness and assist the entrepreneurs to improve on compliance with statutory bodies.”

“I love what I do as I find joy in helping and being of service to mankind. The job that I am in allows me to do that as it assists with entrepreneurship development. With my team, we have been able to push the Seda brand as an enabler in providing support to SMMEs in the Free State, even during the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Jackie draws her inspiration from South Africa’s very own female icon who believed in persistence despite the odds. “Personally I am inspired by the late Winnie Madikizela Mandela. The woman was powerful, compassionate, brave, kind, and resilient.  Winnie stood for what she believed, irrespective of all opposing forces.”

Ilze Stergos

Ilze Stergos

Designing jewellery is about more than making a beautiful ring or necklace. It is also about the story of the piece. Ilze Stergos started M Design Jewellery by selling jewellery, then expanded the business to include repairing, remodelling, designing and manufacturing custom-made pieces of jewellery.

“I love what I do because I get to meet the most interesting and fascinating people.  When consulting with an in love couple to design their wedding bands, I become part of their story; when I help a young, modern lady to transform her family heirlooms into something modern and fun which she can wear with pride and joy, I share a bit of her family history.  At the market days and ladies’ teas where I exhibit, my fiancé, Kenny, assists me. It becomes a joint venture between the two of us.”

The Bloemfontein born and bred lady believes a woman should be strong, fierce, sensitive and selfless. Ilze’s business is centred on building good relationships and going the extra mile to give clients a bespoke experience. “At M Design Jewellery we are different because we work with passion and love. I build up relationships with my clients and often we become friends. I also go the extra mile by often personally delivering a piece of jewellery straight to their door once it has been repaired or manufactured.”

The creative draws her inspiration from historical icon Anne Frank, especially when going through tough times. “I am inspired by Anne Frank, the young Jewish girl who, at age 13 kept a diary of her family’s time in hiding during the holocaust.  She inspires me because even at the toughest times she kept her faith and remained positive, even on the difficult days.  Her famous quote ‘I don’t think of all the misery, but of the beauty that still remains’

After a battle with cancer five years ago, a healthy lifestyle has become Annemarie Cronje’s passion, particularly one that allows her to help other women to be beautiful from the inside out.

The mother of two hails from Cape Town but has come to call Bloemfontein her home. This is where Annemarie manages a team of consultants spread all over South Africa, helping them build their businesses as well as change people’s lives with wonderful Rooibos products. “A healthy lifestyle became my passion when I went through cancer but I have always loved working with people. So now I can help people to live a healthy life and take care of their skin – all while forming friendships with my wonderful clients. I look forward to every day, working with my team of consultants and helping clients with skin or health challenges,” she says.

Annique is a proudly South African range that has been creating products that are 100% compatible to the South African climate and circumstances as well as exporting to other countries for 49 years. “The best decision I ever made, was to get involved with Annique full time, which means working from home and spending more time with my family while earning an income. My son is also part of my business and it is so special to work with him and also learn from his young, creative ideas.”

“Continuous research has proved that Rooibos is anti-allergic, makes the skin beautiful, prevents diseases like diabetes, heart problems and cancer. The latest research also proved that it is excellent for serious sports participants. Because of a strong health and allergy range, it also creates an excellent income.”

Annemarie gains inspiration from other women who wear many hats in order to provide for their families and support their communities. “Women who inspire me are young mothers who have a full-time career while taking care of their family and at the same time making a difference in our community.”
