Here they are…
Lizandra Wessels – Lizandra is a wife, a mother, and the owner of Sage Academy SA – a private independent school that follows a neurodiverse approach and provides remedial education to learners with ADHD and high functioning autism. Lizandra’s work as a teacher and her journey as a mother have made her an activist for children with ADHD, and this prompted her to establish Sage Academy SA.
Himne Calitz – Himne is the owner and founder of Hoofbeats Equine Assisted Learning. Himne studied Equitherapy in Johannesburg and now offers equitherapy classes at five primary schools in Bloemfontein. She believes that equitherapy assists children in developing physically and scholastically, and that it further helps children, who have suffered trauma or loss, to heal.
Refilwe Xaba – Refilwe is the busy mother of two children under two years old. But, as if that’s not enough, she’s also a Programme Coordinator at the UFS, and the owner of a natural haircare brand called GloLooks, which also has a hair studio. Refilwe says her true passion lies with entrepreneurship, and how one can uplift people through entrepreneurship. For her it is about bridging the gap by empowering South Africans through knowledge.
Karen Heuer – Karen studied B. Education at the UFS; but, for the last five years, she is a trainer (CF-L2) at Crossfit Resuelto, together with her husband, Robbie Heuer. According to Karen, her love for Crossfit grew because of the incredible sense of community she experienced in these classes. She says as a trainer you also become a counsellor of sorts as you often pick up when somebody is having a bad day and you are able to offer an ear.
Sebabatso Tsaoane – Sebabatso is not only studying towards a Master’s degree in Nursing, she is a midwife, a business owner, and the founder of an NGO called Black Woman Arise Women’s Health Foundation, which demystifies sexual reproductive health. She says that although she comes from humble beginnings, this has not stopped her from living up to her full potential. Her drive to succeed comes from her parents, whom she says validated her in so many ways and taught her to believe in herself.
Sharine Barnard – Although Sharine studied a BCom degree with Law, today she calls herself ‘a farmer and a businesswoman’. As the coowner of Bagamoya Wildlife Estate, she spends her days surrounded by big cats and other wild animals. But, she is also a mother to five children, a wife to her university sweetheart, and a firm believer in changing people’s lives through her actions. ‘I want to motivate people, especially women, to do anything they put their minds to despite the challenges they face.’
Ntokozo Nkabinde – Although Ntokozo studied Town and Regional Planning, since 2016, she has been a Donor Relations Officer at the UFS. She says although her job involves working with donors, her Town Planning background taught her how important the built environment is for the overall well-being of communities. Ntokozo is a staunch believer in equal education for everybody, and she has been involved in a mentorship programme at a children’s home.
Nishana Wilson – Nishana is an educator by profession, which gives her the opportunity to touch lives. It also has given her a platform to get involved in community projects, such as the Food Drive, which provides learners with a meal that they can take home with them, and a Sanitary Product Drive. Her trademark Afro speaks to another passion of hers – breaking down beauty stereotypes. She feels strongly about the fact that women should own their own unique style of beauty.
