When planning our 2025 Get It<\/em> Bridal Edition, we wanted a colour palette that was bold, timeless, and full of elegance. Enter the Colbys. Griffin and Taya-Joy\u2019s wedding not only embraced our chosen black and white theme \u2013 it showed it off in such a beautiful way.<\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of our biggest goals was for the day to feel like us<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

For Bloemfontein locals Griffin and Taya-Joy Colby, who held their wedding in 2024, their love story has been nearly a decade in the making.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m 28, born and bred in the City of Roses,\u201d says Taya-Joy. \u201cI work as an aftercare teacher. Griffin is 32, also from Bloem, and wears many hats \u2013 he\u2019s a SA Rugby Elite Referee, works in Student Affairs and Residence Life at UFS, and is the Referee Manager at the Free State Rugby Union.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their paths first crossed when Taya-Joy was just 15. \u201cWe met on BBM,\u201d she shares. \u201cWe chatted for a while before finally meeting up in person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Griffin and Taya-Joy spent over six wonderful years together before Griffin proposed in the most unexpected way.<\/p>\n

\"\"\u201cI actually helped him pack for a rugby trip to Cape Town,\u201d says Taya-Joy. \u201cBut while I was at a workshop, he kept messaging me and suggesting what I should wear. I was a bit suspicious! My sister-in-law asked me to meet for coffee at the botanical gardens… and then left me at the entrance, telling me to walk a certain path. There was Griffin. He had planned a full setup, photographer and all. I was so shocked. Of course, I said yes!\u201d<\/p>\n

That moment confirmed what Taya-Joy had known all along. \u201cI knew he was the one from the first time he came to our home. His calmness just soothed me, and I realised I really loved him. Griffin says he shares my sentiments,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n

More than just a celebration, the Colbys wanted their wedding to be a true reflection of who they are as a couple.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of our biggest goals was for the day to feel like us<\/em>,\u201d explains Taya-Joy. \u201cWe wanted guests to walk in and think, \u2018Wow, this is exactly what I\u2019d picture these two doing\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Their chosen theme? A classic black and white palette \u2013 elegant, minimal, and impactful.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw the idea of only the bride and groom wearing white on Pinterest and mentioned it to Griffin,\u201d she says. \u201cWe didn\u2019t want anything excessive, and black and white was just perfect for us. When our florist, Vanessa from Flourish, showed us a black and white flower that looked like my engagement ring \u2013 it all tied together beautifully.\u201d<\/p>\n

While asking guests to wear black came with some nerves, the couple says everyone pulled through.<\/p>\n

Griffin and Taya-Joy knew from the start that they wanted to be hands-on. \u201cWe didn\u2019t have a wedding planner. We wanted to be as involved as possible,\u201d they say.<\/p>\n

And though weddings are known to be stressful, this couple kept things cool.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re pretty chilled people, and that helped,\u201d Griffin shares. \u201cWe did have a budget, but quickly realised how expensive weddings can be. Even a simple wedding comes at a cost. We saved money by doing our menus, invites and table seating ourselves,\u201d Taya-Joy adds.<\/p>\n

The first thing they booked after getting engaged? The venue.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy \u2018something blue\u2019 were blue buttons sewn onto my garter from my gran,\u201d Taya-Joy says. And of course, rugby made an appearance \u2013 during cocktail hour, the Springbok vs All Blacks game played in the background. \u201cWe had a few fans and referees in the crowd, so it just felt right,\u201d says Griffin.<\/p>\n

As for their first dance? Well, it didn\u2019t go exactly<\/em> as planned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a song picked out, but the DJ accidentally played our grand entrance track instead,\u201d Taya-Joy laughs. \u201cThe MC invited all our guests to join in, and that became our first dance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now, eight months into their marriage, the Colbys reflect on the day with nothing but joy. \u201cEven in 10 years, we think we\u2019d still say we wouldn\u2019t change a thing,\u201d they say.<\/p>\n

\"\"Their relationship has only deepened since saying \u2018I do\u2019.\u00a0\u201cOur wedding had a big sense of togetherness,\u201d they share. \u201cTogetherness is something we definitely strive for. When married people say you don\u2019t know the feeling of love until you\u2019re married, they know what they\u2019re talking about. We\u2019re as close as ever.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked what advice they\u2019d give future brides and grooms, the Colbys keep it real.<\/p>\n

\u201cStick together,\u201d they say. \u201cAt the end of the day, it\u2019s your wedding. Weddings shouldn\u2019t cause tension between you and your partner. Communicate \u2013 check in with each other often.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taya-Joy has a few words of wisdom for brides: \u201cDon\u2019t try to do everything. Ask for help. You can\u2019t control it all, but you can<\/em> enjoy what you can<\/em> control.\u201d<\/p>\n

And from Griffin? \u201cGrooms \u2013 HELP your fianc\u00e9e. She\u2019s not marrying herself!\u201d<\/p>\n
