In Bloemfontein, Jan van der Walt, Chief Technology Officer of Central Media Group, has forged a dynamic career at one of South Africa\u2019s top radio stations, OFM. From childhood dreams of farming to leading technological innovation, his story is one of adaptability and passion.<\/p>\n
Jan\u2019s early ambitions were rooted in the land. \u201cAs a child, my dream was to become a farmer. I had a huge passion for an Afrikaner cow. For me, it\u2019s the most beautiful animal on the planet,\u201d he recalls. With no family farm, life led him elsewhere. After military service, a bursary from the SABC sparked his path in electrical engineering. By 1990, he was a technician at the SABC in Bloemfontein, starting his journey in the radio industry.<\/p>\n
The industry\u2019s unpredictability fuels Jan. \u201cThe radio industry is probably one of the most dynamic environments to work in,\u201d he says. \u201cI don\u2019t think I would have survived any other place, as routine work is not for me!\u201d<\/p>\n
From broadcasting atop a fire truck\u2019s ladder to airing live from a helium airship, Jan turns creative ideas into reality. \u201cIn the radio industry, there\u2019s no such thing as a typical day,\u201d he laughs. Operating 24\/7, his team tackles equipment failures at any hour, balancing maintenance and round-the-clock support.<\/p>\n
As a Bloemfontein businessman, Jan knows success demands effort. \u201cIf it was easy, we\u2019d all be rich! Only hard work, commitment, perseverance, and honesty will ensure you can fulfil your obligations,\u201d he says. His philosophy is simple: \u201cSuccess is reaching your goals. Set realistic goals and work towards them until they\u2019re reached. Then reset and go for it.\u201d This cycle creates a \u201cpowerful positive snowball effect.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jan credits OFM\u2019s success for shaping his career. \u201cThe fact that I\u2019m privileged to be part of a very successful radio station had a huge effect on my career,\u201d he reflects. Yet, balance is key. \u201cBesides the glorification of God, man\u2019s purpose is to live a full and balanced life that contributes to the community. I work to live, I don\u2019t live to work,\u201d he says. A former skydiver with over 600 jumps, Jan\u2019s adventurous spirit also includes scuba diving and bow-hunting. \u201cI was somewhat of an adrenaline junky,\u201d he admits.<\/p>\n
Community is central to Jan\u2019s life. \u201cWe humans are herd animals. We cannot exist without a community,\u201d he says, actively engaging in his children\u2019s school, church, and beyond. His childhood farming dream persists through a small cattle herd he manages with friends, calling it \u201cfood for the soul.\u201d<\/p>\n
