She is the founder Bloemfontein based Belly & Boobs that offers pregnancy, birth and postpartum doula services. \u201cSupporting families through pregnancy, birth, and those early parenting days just feels like where I\u2019m meant to be. I work with families in hospitals, birthing centres, and home birth settings, and I love how each space brings something unique to the experience,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n
Like many aspects of life, birthing methods have evolved over the years, adapting to new knowledge, techniques, and the changing needs of mothers. Amanda explains natural birth used to mean no meds and no interventions but it has somehow shifted to being more about giving birth in in a way that feels instinctive, supported, and respectful. \u201cFor some, it\u2019s at home in a birth pool with candles lit; for others, it\u2019s in a hospital room with their doula and a birth plan they feel confident about. It\u2019s less about strict rules and more about being informed and supported to let birth unfold in its own rhythm.\u201d<\/p>\n
Every setting has its own atmosphere, depending on the family and how they want to experience giving birth. The key is finding the space where you feel safest and most supported.<\/p>\n
\u201cHome birth is just that \u2013 in your own space, with midwives and usually a doula supporting you. It\u2019s deeply personal, calm, and familiar. Birthing centres are more like a cosy in-between, not quite home, not quite hospital. They\u2019re designed for low-risk births and feel more nurturing than clinical. Hospitals offer more medical resources and are often the default, especially for higher-risk situations.\u201d<\/p>\n
Start by doing research, watch positive birth videos, read gentle birth stories, and connect with a doula or midwife to talk through questions you may have. It all starts with adequate preparation and having the right team by your side. As a doula, Amanda aims to create a calm, grounded environment and offer support through every stage.<\/p>\n
\u201cMidwives are trained to recognise if something\u2019s not quite right and will transfer you to a hospital if needed. Whether at home or in a birthing centre, there\u2019s usually a plan in place for emergencies. But most of the time, things unfold beautifully and being in a peaceful, familiar space helps your body do what it\u2019s made to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
She focuses on providing emotional and physical support during labour, helping mothers breathe through contractions, find comfortable positions, remain calm, and feel acknowledged. Often a constant presence from early labour to the first feed, she works alongside midwives. Their main focus is to support and protect the birth space.<\/p>\n
People often assume that home birth or birthing centre birth is risky but that is not the case as they are trained and qualified professionals who ensure that both mother and baby are well taken care of.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnother myth is that there\u2019s no pain relief. While it\u2019s true you won\u2019t find epidurals at home or in most centres, there are so many comfort tools that work really well: warm water, massage, movement, breathing, and continuous support.\u201d<\/p>\n
The main limitation is that you need to be a good candidate. Some medical conditions or complications mean a hospital is a safer choice.<\/p>\n
More families are starting to ask about their option and the growing interest in home birth, birthing centres, and low-intervention hospital births has proven that parents want to be involved in the decision making process. Amanda embraces this shift as it indicates that families have a voice.<\/p>\n
Her advice when starting this journey is that you think about what kind of environment you feel most comfortable in and to ask as many questions as possible. \u201cAsk about your options, meet with care providers, and don\u2019t be afraid to ask lots of questions. What does each setting offer? What happens if things change? What kind of support will you have? Your birth space should make you feel safe, respected, and seen. It\u2019s okay to take your time exploring what that looks like for you.\u201d<\/p>\n
