Andile Qongqo, popularly known as Andile Q, says he grew up surrounded by music. The sweet melodies of his mother singing in the church choir, along with local music groups from his youth, continue to resonate with him as he navigates the music industry as an adult. Pursuing a music career felt natural, he says, a passion he was compelled to turn into a lifelong journey.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a child, our neighbour would play (the American jazz trio) Gene Harris & The Three Sounds every Sunday. I didn\u2019t realise it then, but I was falling in love with the piano\u2019s voice \u2013 my fingers would instinctively tap along on the dining table. Jazz spoke to me because it tells stories of resilience, freedom, and identity.\u201d<\/p>\n
Over the years, he has released two independent albums and five singles. \u201cKnowing that someone in Singapore is listening to my music \u2013 my story told through black and white keys \u2013 remains one of my proudest milestones,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n
Andile focuses on making music relatable. He achieves this by pairing his music with time-lapses as he travels through the City of Roses. The aim is to encourage his audience to rediscover how they listen to music. He hopes to evoke a sense of memory and nostalgia for those who don\u2019t visit the city often while keeping his work meaningful.<\/p>\n
He stays authentic and reminds himself that his role as an artist is not to impress, but to express. That truth keeps him grounded and motivated, even in tough times.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne viewer commented on a time-lapse, excited that I\u2019d driven past their old house. Others began sharing memories, asking about hikes I do on Naval Hill and in the Brandkop Conservancy, and discussing the meaning of Mangaung. Those interactions turn my posts into community conversations \u2013 people connecting through shared spaces and stories.\u201d<\/p>\n
As the year comes to an end, and many people are looking forward to celebrating with family and friends, Andile wants to remind them to turn up the music and \u201cjazz up\u201d their holidays. \u201cAdd a few swinging carols to your playlist. You might be surprised by how fresh and joyful they sound.\u201d He is especially excited to press play on a playlist that blends jazz and South African soul. For him, the genre pairs perfectly with hiking, travel, and discovering new live music venues around the Free State.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t imagine any celebration without music. It unites people, bringing joy as we sing, dance, and share the same rhythm. Music is the heartbeat of every festive moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
Looking ahead, Andile is focusing on creating content that explores personal development through music, inspired by his e-book Symphony of Self. Much of his upcoming video work will be built around that theme.<\/p>\n
Professionally, he is also grateful to have shared his knowledge with aspiring musicians, especially as technology and AI are reshaping the creative landscape.<\/p>\n
