Plant up a pot or two or three of petunias and place them where you\u2019ll see them as you dash off to work in the morning, or stagger back in the afternoon, or in your favourite chill out place. They\u2019ll make life feel just a little better and happier!<\/p>\n<p>Lifestyle petunias are flowering powerhouses, perfect for pots and hanging baskets. They fill out quickly but stay neat and flower like champions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21538\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21538\" style=\"width: 297px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21538 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Alice-Coetzee-20-03-2026-gardening-petunias-photo-2-297x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"297\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21538\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u2018Night Sky\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>3 things you should know about lifestyle petunias<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Feed them often!<\/strong> Pot petunias are hungry plants. That\u2019s because flowering takes up a lot of energy and the plants need nutrition to constantly replenish themselves and keep on\u00a0 flowering.\u00a0 Make a point of feeding them with a liquid fertiliser at least twice a month. You can even do it weekly with a liquid fertiliser diluted at half strength. Keep that up and the flowers will be spectacular.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Water daily<\/strong> on very hot days, reducing as the days get cooler. Garden petunias are drought tolerant but pot grown petunias need consistent watering. They suffer if the soil dries out completely. If a potting soil drains well, daily watering should not result in waterlogged pots.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t overfill a pot<\/strong>. In other words, don\u2019t plant too many plants in one pot. The pots will dry out quicker and need even more feeding. A general rule is three plants in a 30cm diameter pot. Remember, the smaller the pot the quicker it dries out and uses nutrients.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s new \u2026Crazytunias<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21539\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21539\" style=\"width: 306px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21539 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Alice-Coetzee-20-03-2026-gardening-petunias-photo-3-306x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"306\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21539\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crazytunia \u2018Moonstruck.\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There\u2019s plenty of the Wow factor with Crazytunias.\u00a0 Their vibrant multi-colour blooms feature stars, stripes, and contrasting petal edge. They are fuss free and fast growing, with a neat and tidy growth. They are also heat tolerant, and\u00a0 the flowers drop off cleanly so there is no need to deadhead. Plants in\u00a0 containers like plenty of morning sun with some afternoon shade. Use them to brighten outdoor living areas. Popular types include \u2018 Cosmic Violet\u2019 and \u2018Cosmic Pink,\u2019 \u2018Moonstruck\u2019 and \u2018Black and White.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21540\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21540\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21540 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Alice-Coetzee-20-03-2026-gardening-petunias-photo-4-400x254.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"254\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21540\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">BeautiCal \u2018Rose Star\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>BeautiCal \u2018Rose Star\u2019 is a petunia \u2013 calibrachoa cross with large petunia-like two-toned flowers that have the typical vivid colouration of calibrachoa. This robust intergeneric hybrid can handle frost as well as recover fast from wet weather. Plants are mounded and compact, ideal for\u00a0 garden beds, containers and hanging baskets. Plants do best grown in acidic soil in full sun or with partial shade. Fertilise monthly or with a long acting fertiliser when planting.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21541\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21541\" style=\"width: 267px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21541 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Alice-Coetzee-20-03-2026-gardening-petunias-photo-5-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21541\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amazonas \u2018Plum Cockatoo\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Amazonas \u2018Plum Cockatoo\u2019 is a real attention grabber because of its unusual flowers. Each flower has a deep plum centre that bleeds into the creamy green frilled petals. Its long flowering period is enhanced by the fact that the flowers recover quickly after wind and rain.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21542\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21542\" style=\"width: 347px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21542 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Alice-Coetzee-20-03-2026-gardening-petunias-photo-6-347x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"347\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21542\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8216;Blueberry Shake\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Petunia \u2018Strawberry Shake\u2019\u00a0 as well as Blueberry Shake and Raspberry Shake, are compact petunias that are perfect for patio containers or hanging baskets and are just as pretty in the garden. Plants grow 20cm high and wide and stay round and neat. They like plenty of sun and pots that drain well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sky Petunias <\/strong>The first of these novelty petunias was introduced in 2016 and they still stand out for their starry, speckled petals in a range of colours. The first was \u2018Night Sky\u2019 <strong>\u2018<\/strong>that\u00a0 was the result of a breeding breakthrough because no other petunia had the starry, speckled pattern on its blooms.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21543\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21543\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21543 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Alice-Coetzee-20-03-2026-gardening-petunias-photo-7-400x377.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"377\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21543\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8216;Baby Doll Improved\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Each bloom is quite different, with its own unique pattern and this pattern can change with the temperature, producing interesting and variable blooms throughout the growing season. Other variations are \u2018Cherry Sky\u2019 (red), Baby Doll (pink and white), \u2018Circus Sky\u2019 and Petunia Splash Magenta Mambo.<\/p>\n<p>The Sky petunias are strong growing, and some are semi-trailing, like \u2018Night Sky\u2019. The flowers are single and tolerate wet weather. Plants can double-up as in indoor flower arrangement for a day or two before being moved onto the patio.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21544\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21544\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21544 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Alice-Coetzee-20-03-2026-gardening-petunias-photo-8-400x285.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"285\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21544\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amore \u2018Heart and Soul\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Amore series require a closer look and you will find a heart-shaped pattern on every bloom. \u2018Queen of Hearts\u2019 has yellow petals with bright red hearts, while \u2018Heart and Soul\u2019 has a maroon heart contrasting with lighter yellow petals. These are high impact petunias for pots or \u00a0hanging baskets.
