Although tiny, microgreens pack a nutrient punch, more intense that their mature counterparts and are flavourful too.<\/p>\n<p>Growing your own means that you can use them lavishly as a\u00a0 garnish or topping\u00a0 for almost everything, to add extra crunch to salads, in burgers, dips and spreads, even your home-made sushi.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22486\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22486\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22486 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Alice-Coetzee-19-06-2025-gardening-microgreens-photo-2-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22486\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From planter to plate.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>All you need\u2026to get started<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A warm, sunny room, windowsill or enclosed patio. This mix is particularly good for growing in the cooler months. Sprinkle this mix over roasted veggies, Asian stir fries and meat dishes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22489\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22489\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22489 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Alice-Coetzee-19-06-2025-gardening-microgreens-photo-5-400x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22489\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u2018Rainbow Blend\u2019 microgreens.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018Rainbow Blend\u2019 is a colourful and unusual combo of beetroot, Asian cabbage, kohlrabi, Italian broccoli and radish. This mix is easy to grow and snip with scissors when the tiny leaves are 2 \u2013 4cm tall. Sprinkle over salads, fish, as a topping for sushi, for adding crunch to burgers, and anything else could do with a green fix.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>All three microgreen mixes are from RAW seeds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Sowing\u2026to harvest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sow thickly and keep moist during germination. Seeds germinate within 7 -14 days and can be watered with a liquid fertiliser at half strength once a week. Harvest when the greens are 5 \u2013 10 cm tall, generally within 15 days.<\/p>\n<p>Sow a new batch of microgreens every 10 days for a continuous supply. You can also let a batch grow into mini-leaves that are harvested when the leaves are about 6cm \u201310cm tall.<\/p>\n<p>Harvest by snipping off the greens with a sharp pair of kitchen scissors and use as soon as you can for maximum freshness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Soil-less planter<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22490\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22490\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22490 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Alice-Coetzee-19-06-2025-gardening-microgreens-photo-6-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22490\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gusta Garden \u2018Harry Herbs\u2019 soilless planter.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Working indoors with soil and water can be messy. \u2018Harry Herbs\u2019 planter from Gusta Gardens takes a lot of the fuss out of growing microgreens and other edibles from seed.<\/p>\n<p>It has the option of a soilless planting mat and its 5-litre water reservoir with four water wicks supplies the right amount of water.
