The beauty of the blooms is overwhelming, whether it\u2019s in the garden or snatched views of other people\u2019s roses, even the roses blooming on traffic islands. At Ludwig\u2019s Rose farm the thousands of blooms can be experienced by tractor-train rides through the rose fields or the Saturday Park Run through the roses.<\/p>\n<p>What is it about roses that put us under their spell?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Every rose tells a story<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23529\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23529\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23529 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Alice-Coetzee-02-10-2026-gardening-roses-photo-2-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23529\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u2018Missing You\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Every rose has a name, and with that comes a personality, not to mention a lineage that stretches back through generations.\u00a0 Through roses we remember. Roses that granny grew, that were part of our childhood, or roses reminding us of a beloved family member or friend no longer with us. Rose names can also express friendship and celebrations, or simply what is dear to us.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sip and snip <\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23530\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23530\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23530 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Alice-Coetzee-02-10-2026-gardening-roses-photo-3-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23530\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u2018Dreamweaver\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Roses always provide an excuse for \u2018me time\u2019 in the garden. Combine that first cup of morning coffee with a walk among the roses, secateur in hand dead-heading spent blooms, or picking blooms for the home. Or it could be an evening wind-down and watering after a hot day.<\/p>\n<p>If you are suffering from social media burnout, roses are the medicine.\u00a0 The therapeutic aspect of gardening is well documented, and according to the 2027 Trends Report from the Garden Media Group, even Millennials, Gen X and Gen Z who grew up on social media are seeking its regenerative rewards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Soft socialising<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23531\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23531\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23531 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Alice-Coetzee-02-10-2026-gardening-roses-photo-4-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23531\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u2018Nomzamo\u2019 a showstopper.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Roses not only get us into nature but help us make \u2018soft\u2019 connections. According to the Trend Report, people are seeking screen free activities, but \u201cwithout the stress of having to \u2018perform\u2019 or make small talk\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>For rose gardeners there are seasonal rose care demo\u2019s\/ workshops, especially for beginners, flower arranging, tours to rose gardens organised by rose societies, rose shows and festivals around the country that draw rose lovers together. Because the activity is the focus, there is less social pressure and connections can develop over time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Create Your Calm <\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23532\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23532\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23532 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Alice-Coetzee-02-10-2026-gardening-roses-photo-5-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23532\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u2018My Best Friend\u2019 Eco Chic rose.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ritual is an important contributor to our sense of wellbeing, because it is about order, predictability and continuity. In its own way, growing roses has its own rituals, and regular care makes rose growing easy and rewarding.<\/p>\n<p>This is what a rose year looks like:<\/p>\n<p><strong>September to April<\/strong>: fertilise once a month with a rose fertiliser (Vigorosa), water deeply once a week and spray for pests and fungus disease once or twice a month.<\/p>\n<p><strong>May to July:<\/strong> roses are going dormant, reduce watering, no need to spray. From mid-July, winter prune the roses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>August to September:<\/strong> support new spring growth with weekly deep watering, fertiliser and apply Koinor as a drench to provide protection against sucking insects for up to six months.
