Tonight’s Exclusive Books Cover to Cover online book show is dedicated to women writers and especially those emanating from the African diaspora flighting.

Joanne Joseph chats to literary South African icon Sindiwe Magona about carrying the past into the present and future from her book When the Village Sleeps and Cherie Jones discusses the hardships and empowerment she felt while writing her novel How the One-Armed Woman Sweeps Her House.

Voiceover highlights include I Am A Girl From Africa by Elizabeth Nyamayaro, The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams, To the Wolves by Caryn Dolly, The Black Pimpernel by Zukiswa Wanner, Becoming adapted for young readers by Michelle Obama and The Girl with 21 Questions by Boitumelo Mothupi.

‘We have dedicated this show to women writers. Their literary contributions point to a spectrum of experiences, some of them harrowing, others triumphant. Most of all, they open our eyes to the heterogeneous nature of being women – the divergence of our lives, histories and beliefs and the convergence in what are often our universal aspirations,’ says Joanne Joseph.

Tune in this evening, 6pm on the Exclusive Books YouTube channel.
