As the summer holidays fast approach, many of us are looking forward to taking some timeout to recharge. Celebrating the season with family and friends is the best way to create everlasting memories. It’s a time for sharing sunsets, savouring wine, enjoying rejuvenating leisure activities, visiting our favourite getaway destinations, laughing and simply embracing life.
We recently caught up with one of South Africa’s favourite media figures, mom, model, TV presenter and show host Minki van der Westhuizen, as she shares her top holiday choices for a sensational summer getaway.
Minki’s Top Holiday Destination?
My favourite local destination is Lanzerac (which is literally on my doorstep) just 5 minutes away from my home. It’s very special to me because my dad used to go there for drinks when I was younger. It’s so lush and beautiful and seeing the views of the mountains dropping into the vineyard is a view I could stare at for hours. I literally take a deep comforting breath every time I drive through the entrance between the trees – not to mention all the great facilities. Lanzerac truly is my happy place!
Most-loved Holiday Pastime?
I love some quiet time to read while on holiday. My job is so intense, that if I get the opportunity, I really enjoy letting my hair down and having some me-time! I’m heaven with a good book, peace and quiet and a glass of wine.
Favourite Choice of Wine?
I am a bit of a bubbly and MCC girl and absolutely love the Lanzerac MCC Blanc de Blancs Brut they offer. I also really enjoy the Lanzerac Pinotage Rosé – it has such a beautiful taste.
Favourite Guilty Pleasure on Holiday?
I do love a well-made cocktail or a luscious desert – so when on holiday – I love being able to indulge in both – if I feel like it. It’s just lovely to relax, enjoy life and not have to worry about meetings or deadlines OR my waistline. 😉 When my family and I are visiting Lanzerac, we always look forward to having their delicious desserts.
Favourite Cocktail?
There is this gin cocktail with fresh granadilla I really love.
Ultimate Dessert?
It has to be chocolate fondant.
Summer Read?
I am trying to read Michelle Obama’s ‘Becoming’ which I am slowly working my way through. She is so inspiring! I love reading but don’t get a whole lot of time to read during my busy week.

Favourite Spa Treatment
I love visiting the spa whenever I can. It is an important part of my beauty regime actually but on holiday, I enjoy treatments that much more. They help me unwind and get into the spirit of the break. My favourite treatment is the Lanzerac Elemis Thousand Flower Detox Wrap.
Holiday Wardrobe Essential?
My favourite choice is a pretty Caftan dress. It obviously depends where you are but I just love how relaxed a Caftan feels to wear.
