We’re not talking fashion threads or hair removal, these threads are a new aesthetic procedure that women across the country are raving about.

Thread lifting is a minimally invasive procedure that’s guaranteed to turn your life around. As we age, gravity takes its toll on our skin and sagging/drooping occurs. Many women are self-conscious of these changes but don’t necessarily want to go under the knife to fix them, which is why threading was invented. Dr Carmen Wilsenach who operates from The Cosmetic and Dental Emporium (CDE), gives us the low down on this procedure that has the beauty industry buzzing.

‘Compared to surgical face lifts, threading involves less trauma. There are no visible scars with this procedure, and it takes 20 to 40 minutes to complete. The results can be seen immediately, and the results improve as the collagen and elastin form and mature. Thread lifting lasts between 18 and 24 months and it’s advisable to stay at home for 2-4 days post procedure as some bruising and swelling may occur. The results with threading are really natural,’ she explained.

According to Dr Wilsenach, thread lifting is a three-step process.
Firstly, an anaesthetic is injected into the skin. A cannula containing the thread is inserted into the skin creating a slight tension in the skin (tightening and lifting). Lastly, the threads are placed under the skin and encourage the body to react by producing collagen.

Essentially, there are five different types of threading:

PDO Threads

These threads are used to tighten sagging skin by the implantation of very thin threads. These types of threads are usually used to enhance cheekbones, lift eyebrows and to tighten the neck area.

Hyaluronic acid threads

These threads are used to lift and tighten sagging facial tissue. They are inserted into the deeper tissue of the skin and create a firming and tightening effect and also stimulate the formation of collagen.

YKO threads

This thread is an alternative to rhinoplasty and can be used alongside the injection of hyaluronic acid (filler) in order to complete the non-surgical rhinoplasty. The thread defines and shapes the nose.

Aptos spiral threads

These are used to shape and volumise the lips

Silhouettes thread lift

Threads are inserted into the cheeks or brow and are used to tighten the skin and treat sagging and drooping. The thread is absorbed into the skin and encourages natural collagen production over time.
