Easter is one of the most anticipated long weekends of the year … and it’s with all of us staying at home, this year we need to make sure it’s as much fun as possible.
Hide the eggs and treats
If you are hosting an Easter egg hunt for kids and an egg hunt for teenagers, divide the garden into two zones so you can organise based on age groups. Go easy on the smaller kids by leaving eggs on low branches and in open places. You could even demarcate their area to help guide them on the right path. Then, make it more difficult for older ones by hiding them in difficult places such as under leaves, in branches, at the bottom of drainpipes, in the flowerbeds, hidden inside a curled-up garden hose, in the mailbox, or on top of the car tires.
Keep things fair and safe
Younger kids may be at a slight disadvantage compared to the slightly older children, so why not split everyone into even teams with varying ages and tell them to make a ‘team huddle area’. When they find an egg, they have to run back and put it in their huddle area. At the end, the team’s spoils are divided evenly, with victory for all. If you are only catering for toddlers, then you could also do a balloon hunt, which is a lot a lot easier because you can tie an egg or toy to the bottom of each string on a balloon. To make sure that the chocolate-hungry kids don’t hurt themselves by climbing over fences for treats, establish the boundaries of your Easter egg hunt. Tell kids to stay between the house and the pool fence, for instance, or to go no further than the driveway.
The 50/50 split
Make sure your egg hunt includes mindful snacking. Incorporate 50 per cent chocolate and 50 per cent small toys, puzzles, activities, nuts, fruit and vegetables for a bit of variety. This will satisfy kids with finding a good batch of goodies and help make it fun for those kids who cannot eat chocolate. If you are hosting an Easter egg hunt for very small kids make sure the eggs are filled with items that do not contain small parts or choking hazards.
Baskets or reusable shopping bags
Hiding treats is easy, but kids will need something to collect them in. You could give them baskets beforehand and ask them to decorate with colourful ribbons or encourage them to use reusable shopping bags or even backpacks for more of an adventurous feel.
Give them a map
Give each child a copy of a map that leads the way to the treats, or think up some intriguing clues and riddles, and see if the kids can work them out. For smaller kids, read them the clues or help them find visual clues you have set up beforehand, such as bunny footprints drawn on the sidewalk with chalk, or half-eaten carrots that are a tell-tale sign a bunny has been in the area.
The Clues
Written clues could add a nice personal touch and make for a great adventure for older kids. You could even go one-step further and write with a UV pen, meaning you can only see the clues with a UV torch. If you have younger children try using picture clues instead.
Keep a Tally & Finishing Up
It is worth making a note of how many eggs you have hidden and some of the sneaky spots you managed to hide them. You do not want your pets to be unearthing chocolate a few months later. Once the kids have completed the hunt, you could also award a bigger prize to the child that collected the most eggs, or another more inclusive idea would be to incorporate a treat-filled piñata for the kids to bash as the final activity in the hunt.
HOW TO DECORATE YOUR HOUSE FOR A HOPPY EASTER
Fill a tray with moss and votive candles. Finish the display with a bunny figure (or chocolate bunny), candies, and decorated Easter eggs.
Get your house ready by hanging pastel balloons outside your home and an Easter decoration on your door Google ‘printable Easter signage’ or make simple Easter themed signage on Canvas, a free and easy to use design platform.
Decorate a few tables with pastel-colour tablecloths and streamers.
Make your home extra pretty with bunches of flowers (picked from your garden … don’t ignore the lockdown rules) arranged in big white milk jugs
A generic crepe paper lantern can become an Easter bunny head with the addition of craft paper ears, eyes, and whiskers, plus pom-poms for the nose and eyes.
Paint hard-boiled eggs for easy Easter decorations, or you could even decorate with temporary tattoos

RECIPES
Did someone say ‘Frozen Fluffies’? Yes, and with them you can make these delicious Fluffies Pops!
What you need for the Fluffies dippers

- 5x Cadbury Fluffies, frozen
- 5 wooden popsicles
- 4x 80g Cadbury Dairy Milk slabs, roughly chopped
- 4x 80g Cadbury Dream slabs, roughly chopped
- Topping suggestions
- Sprinkles
- 100s and 1 000s
- Popping candy
- Biscuit crumbs
- Nuts, crushed
- Or any other of your favourite Cadbury treats
Make it
- Unwrap Fluffies and carefully, but firmly, stick a wooden popsicle through the one
- end until about halfway
- On a non-stick tray, place the Fluffies lollipops into the freezer for a minimum of three hours until nice and firm
- Melt the Cadbury Dairy Milk and Cadbury Dream in separate bowls over a double boiler
- Pour the melted chocolate into two small, but narrow glasses
- Dip the frozen Fluffies lollipops into the melted chocolate: dip half of the frozen Fluffies in the melted Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate and the other half in the melted Cadbury Dream chocolate
- Place the double-dipped frozen Fluffies onto a non-stick tray and decorate with your favourite toppings (try to do this quickly before the chocolate sets)
- Place the decorated double-dipped frozen Fluffies into the freezer for a minimum of three hours, until the outer chocolate layer is firm and crisp
- Enjoy with a glass of hot or cold milk – P.S. Don’t forget to double dip
Top choccie tip: Pour the leftover melted Cadbury Dairy Milk and Cadbury Dream into an empty ice tray and keep frozen until ready to use – eat within one month.
Get creative by creating edible nests – bite size treats for everyone!
What you need for the Fluffies nests
- 2 cups puffed rice cereal
- 4 tablespoons butter, softened
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 10x Cadbury Fluffies
- Oil for greasing muffin tray
Toppings
- Cadbury Whispers
- Cadbury Astros
Make it
- Place the softened butter in a large mixing bowl
- Add the honey
- In the same bowl, melt the Cadbury Fluffies, butter and honey in the microwave,
- stirring occasionally until smooth- be careful not to overheat
- Add the puffed rice cereal to the melted Fluffies mixture and mix well until combined
- Lightly grease a muffin tray and divide the warm mixture evenly between the individual muffin tins, pressing gently with your fingers to shape a bird’s nest
- Chill in the freezer for at least two hours until the Fluffies nests are firm
- Use a sharp knife to ease up the edges and place the nests into colourful muffin cups
- Fill each nest with Cadbury
- Whispers and Astros, or your favourite Cadbury items
