In the middle of a worldwide pandemic, it takes courage to open a new business, but Dr Zama Ndlovu did just that. She tells us more about aesthetic medicine and what lead her to her opening intoSkin.

Zama (as she is affectionately known) is all about positive living, and advocates self-care, love and emotional wellbeing as some of the essential elements needed for women to live a better quality life in today’s strenuous times. It was through her own ‘treat myself’ spoils, on her days off as a GP Anaethetist, that she fell in love with the way skin treatments made her look and feel.

So, with 12 years’ medical experience behind her, Zama began exploring the world of aesthetics for herself and expanded her medical knowledge by first formally training with MedSkills Training Academy in Pretoria, followed by the American Academy of Aesthetics Medicine and finally Tasosol, who specialise in advanced facial threading, before opening intoSkin Medical Aesthetics – a skin optimising, ageing and face-contouring practice – in Westville.

‘I really enjoy the wellness aspect of medical aesthetics, and want to offer these treatments to a new “audience” by sharing what is out there in the world of aesthetics. So many of these treatments could actually benefit men and women physically and psychologically.’  Zama explains that not many people know that treatments like Botox or Dysport can assist with excessive sweating of the palms, underarms and feet – problems she says, that can really pull one’s  self-esteem down and make you self-conscious.

Not being able to sleep and consciously or unconsciously grinding your teeth at night is another example of what  medical aesthetics can help with. ‘Not everyone is aware that there are treatments for this kind of problem, and all intoSkin’s treatment programmes are tailored according to each client’s consultation, concern, needs and skin conditions,’ she says.

Being a huge fan of fresh air and outdoor activity, Zama believes we live in one of the best places in the world, thanks to our mostly sunny days and big, beautiful beaches. However, she says, the glorious sunshine, which is a perfect health booster, is also the cause of premature wrinkles, skin barrier damage, dull pigmentation and other skin problems, mainly caused from photoaging.

‘I offer treatments and at-home products that can improve skin health and conditions, based on the individual skin type and concerns. Collagen, for example,  is one of the main building blocks for healthy skin, and the treatments I offer stimulate collagen production in the skin, directly. And, with a contagious smile, Zama says that because many of her treatments are injected into the skin, came the name ‘intoSkin’.

The enthusiastic and energetic doctor also believes in a holistic approach to skin care, face contouring and ageing by including physical, dietary and mental health into her approach. She says it’s a reminder for people to be more aware and in love with, or into, themselves and their skin. By the end of a consultation, Dr Zama Ndlovu will have reignited your passion for not only your skin, but also your overall health and wellness for a better quality of life.

Winter and stress can damage the skin and this is the perfect time to give your skin some much needed TLC in preparation for more days outside during Level 2 and 1 lockdown.
