After seeing his sister die from cancer at the age of 12, Mt Edgecombe’s health and fitness fanatic Wayne Collin has focussed his attention towards educating people on how they can avoid inflammation and dreaded diseases, as well as achieve a balanced, healthy lifestyle. We spoke to him about his training methods.

Internationally qualified in nutrition, endurance conditioning and strength training, through International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA), Wayne’s been helping people find balance in their lives through sustainable training methods for the past 25 years. His teachings include personal attention and meal plans to suit specific conditions and goals.

Many individuals have benefited from Wayne’s training methods, even his own daughter. ‘About six years ago, Ashleigh decided she wanted to change her life as she had seen how I was helping people feel healthier and stronger. I decided I would eliminate non-nutritional foods from her diet and replace them with healthy choices over a three-week period. Within 12 month’s my daughter’s life was transformed. She lost 27 kilograms and achieved a 20 per cent reduction in body fat,’ beams the proud dad.

Ashleigh’s achievement became the inspiration for Wayne to launch Blast Lifestyle. Along with his prsonalised eating plans, Wayne launched a frozen meal range and a superfood powder range. He also recently opened a fitness studio that enables him to connect with his target market on an even more personal level.
According to Wayne, the Blast Lifestyle allows people to live in a state of balance, and with his help, they will receive the individual support and motivation they need to better themselves.

Exercise ideas without having to buy weights or go into a gym (social distance saviours)
Weighted vest – A filled backpack is a great idea, it can get your heart rate up quicker, better engage your muscles and make you work harder. Can be worn on your back or your front, use it to walk up the stairs if you have and with your regular lunge/squat workout.
Dumbbells – Bags of rice or water bottles make a great alternative to lighter weights.
Resistance bands – Tied pantyhose provide just enough flexibility to create a bit of tension during certain workout movements.
Medicine Ball – Find a large ball you have at home ‘useful if you have kids’ soccer ball, basketball etc. You can do a host of exercises on your abs, legs and arms.
Gliders – Paper plates or socks on a slippery floor, great for leg and ab workouts.

Ways to beat the bloat and lose some weight along the way:
1. You have to eat enough, if your body thinks it is starving it will hold tight onto every gram it has. You have to eat all your required calories.
2. A great app to use is ‘My Fitness Pal’ a calorie tracker is a brilliant tool to help you understand correct portion sizes and where all your sneaky calories are coming in. Once you start to load your daily cappuccinos, your cooking oils and your little snacks you will understand where weight gain comes from.
3. Water consumption is VITAL in weight loss and decreasing bloat, drinking water increases the amount of calories you burn. 0.5 litre of water a day makes you burn 23 calories extra, which amounts to 17,000 calories a year (2kg of fat).
4. If you don’t have a healthy gut this can prevent you from losing weight, so make sure to take your probiotics on a daily basis. And focus on probiotic foods like yogurts, kombucha, kimchi and sauerkraut. A digestive enzyme product will help your body absorb nutrients from the foods you eat, without them certain foods can lead to uncomfortable symptoms and food intolerance.
5. Swop out cow’s milk for almond milk. Almond milk has a much lower calorie count as well as minimal carbs and sugar.
6. To beat the bloat, try to moderate your caffeine intake. More plant, less protein. Take more time to eat. A big focus on managing stress and hormones. Learning to prioritise sleep.

Above all else patience and consistency is key, one cannot get great results overnight!
