As we say goodbye to summer, it’s time to cosy up to new trends and create a warm and inviting home for the cooler months.

Turn up the texture and brighten up your space…

A rich colour palette instantly warms up a room. Embrace the moodiness of winter by including rich jewel tones that include deep greens, warm clays, burgundy and deep mustard colours.

Rattan baskets, natural wooden furniture pieces and accessories such as scatters, throws and rugs will all add texture. Don’t be scared of warm winter throws and soft fur-like blankets to enhance the space.

Light the fire…

Without a doubt, a fireplace in winter becomes the heart of the home and is the perfect setting for comfort and warmth. Accentuate the mantel and make it a focal point by placing a large mirror above or add candleholders and other interesting décor accessories. Create a reading nook by placing an occasional chair nearby and store wood or blankets and throws in large kubu baskets.

Create a winter bed you won’t want to get out of…

A luxurious bed with loads of cosy layers will not only keep you warm but will add dimension and style. Layer throws at the end of your bed or add a textured blanket for added interest and contrast. Quilts are making a comeback and are comfortable and beautiful additions to the bedroom. Throw one over the bottom of your bed to add a pop of colour to an all-white scheme, or mix things up with a versatile, reversible quilt with coordinating prints for a different look. Embrace the casual and comfortable look of a washed cotton duvet cover set for a soft linen-like feel and a gentle creased look that will make you want to hop right into bed, and don’t forget the brushed cotton sheeting and pillowcases that are a firm winter favourite!

Bring the outside in…

The landscape outside may look dreary, but by incorporating flowers, plants and greenery into your winter décor you can add some cheer and joy to your space.

Block out the cold…

Blockout curtains are a real investment as they can help to keep rooms warm in winter by keeping out those chilly winter drafts. Choose a plain or patterned design that will easily blend in with the style of your room. If you love the curtains you have but want the benefits of blockout, a blockout lining can be easily attached to the back of your existing taped curtain. Fully lined jacquard and heavier woven curtains are also great options for your winter windows. These plusher fabrics help to keep the cold out in winter and also protect your furniture and bedlinen from the sun, while making a style statement at the same time.  Layer a blockout curtain or lining underneath a voile curtain for a modern layered effect.

No more bathroom blues…

For an update in your bathroom, include warmer colors, such as hunters green and terracotta, to an all-neutral palette, to lift the spirits.  Indulge in the luxury of a quality, soft, absorbent 100 per cent cotton bath towel or luxury bath sheet.  Keep feet away from cold tiles by adding a bathmat to ensure your space is toasty as you step out your steaming hot bath or shower.  Add room fragrances, oversized kubu baskets for extra storage or laundry and candles to complete the home spa experience.

Did you know?

Exposing yourself to colour early in the morning can lift your spirits and have a positive effect on your mood for the rest of the day. Faux flowers are the perfect solution for busy households, as they require little upkeep, maintenance and are also waterwise. Choose beautiful sculptural leaves for a statement or add pops of colour with orchids, hydrangeas and proteas.
