A group of women are showing their male counterparts that they are more than capable of working and thriving in a typically male-dominated industry.

Shubnum Ramnarain, Branch Manager of Super Tyres new flagship Gateway store, has twenty-five years’ industry experience and explains that there have been a few hurdles that they have faced as women in the tyre industry. “Some male customers presume that I am not knowledgeable but my experience, industry knowledge and hands-on approach enables me to quickly win them over. As soon as men realise that you know what you’re talking about and can assist with wheel alignment or give them expert advice when it comes to choosing the correct tyres, you’ve earned their respect and they take you seriously,” says Shubnam.

Super Tyres Managing Director, Dean Horn, explains that having a female influence in the business has been phenomenal. “Over the few years we have welcomed more women into the business to fulfil various roles from tyre fitters to branch manager positions. Women are equally knowledgeable and have outstanding attention to detail. Their customer service and management skills are fantastic and their willingness to learn and grow is admirable.”

Super Tyres aim to bring more staff through the business by training and upskilling them from the bottom up. Ayanda Ngaleka, a Tyre Fitter from the Super Tyres Gateway store has been with the company for eighteen months after completing a year-long learnership and is thriving. “I have learnt so much at Super Tyres and am proud to be a woman in this industry. I take pride in my work and am very good at fitting tyres, balancing of wheels and repairing punctures.”

Swazi Kubheka and Meruska Dayasankar, both in the sales department at the Super Tyres Gateway store, have noted a growing trend of women coming in to have their tyres replaced and/or wheel alignment seen to. “It is wonderful to see more women coming in to our stores,” says Meruska.

Swazi, who has been with Super Tyres for the past three months has a passion for learning and believes that your attitude sets the tone for the success of your life. “I am really enjoying being a part of the Super Tyres family and have learnt so much already. I love being part of a team and look forward to growing in the company.”

Meruska, who has five years’ experience in the tyre industry, says she is passionate about ensuring customers are happy and loves exceeding their expectations.

All four ladies share the belief that knowledge is power and their advice for fellow women is to never doubt their worth or ability. “Never sell yourself short. You can be successful in a man’s world and are more than capable of achieving great things. Empower yourself through ongoing learning, ensure you have a skill and always strive to do your best,” says Meruska.

Shubnam says she loves working in the tyre industry and has great respect for all women who work in typically male-dominated industries. “This women’s month let’s all make a concerted effort to recognise, honour and appreciate all the wonderful women in our lives.”
