There is a fabulous selection of festive theatrical treats being staged over the year-end holidays at The Playhouse.  First up is an enchanting new production of The Nutcracker, accompanied live by the mighty KZN Philharmonic Orchestra (December 18 and 19 in the Opera Theatre). And what would the year-end  be without a family panto from KickstArt?  Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs promises to be a riot of magic, colour and laughter, with gorgeous sets, puppets, costumes and more (December 18 to 30). The good, bad and very funny stories of life at the heavier end of the scale are brought to the stage in Bigly Yuge, a jolly mash-up of life in the large lane combining comedy, drama, song and dance – mostly in isiZulu. There are performances on December 3 and 4 in the Loft Theatre.

Details: Tickets for all productions are available at webtickets.co.za or visit playhousecompany.com

It’s all about rock at Kloof and Highway SPCA on the Day of Reconciliation. Fashionista Kevin Ellis has a host of activities and entertainment up his sleeves, and there is something for everyone in the family to enjoy… from sun dancers and a We will Rock You fashion show to a rock concert with aspiring singers. There’s even a baby dance contest and kiddies dance class. Take your friends, family and some cash, and treat yourself to tea and eats or a rummage through the SPCA’s fascinating stalls, while the kids search for little rock treasures on a hunt in aid of Organ Donor Awareness and Hero777.

To help you diarize special dates for the year ahead here’s a calendar we think you’ll love. it’s the Green Friends Gardening Club semi-nude birthday calendar, put together by a group of conservationists who’ve gone sans garments for nature and wildlife. Embracing this year’s international Naked in the Garden Day, the women (all in their 60s and 70s) braved the occasion to pose in their own gardens. The result…  this semi-nude birthday calendar sporting their photos alongside the 12 months of the year, with an inspirational quote dedicated to each month. As well as raising funds, they’re raising awareness about the oldest urban conservancy in SA, Everton Conservancy, and Mazarat Animal Rescue, and NPO that rehabilitates, sterilizes and homes rescued animals. R150.
