Not all face masks are created equal

There are several ways to stay safe against Covid-19 and the face mask remains the first line of defence. But, with two years of face mask wearing behind us, there’s no doubt some face masks provide better protection over others and we certainly have earmarked one of our faves … the AirPop Pocket.

Face masks protect in two ways, first by trapping particles through a manufacturing process called melt blown extrusion which thermally or chemically bounds together materials to form a web-like fabric. As this fabric has tiny holes where particles can escape, face masks use three layers that work together to effectively filter and trap particles.

The second part is preventing these particles from escaping into the air. For a mask to provide adequate protection air should not escape at the cheeks, chin and on the sides of the nose. To overcome this, masks should seal around the face, ensuring a tight but comfortable fit around the nose, cheeks and chin and effectively filter out the air and trap airborne viruses.

AirPop face masks offer the same highly effective two-way barrier as the best medical and industrial-grade masks, but are engineered for consumers, to be comfortable all day. They’re available from Takealot.com and are priced at R399 for a packet of four.
