Before you actually buy a pet, it is important to understand how to take good care of them.

A healthy environment When choosing an area to provide for your pet outdoors and indoors, ensure you consider their needs, comfort, health, and happiness.

Food’s served Provide a good source of healthy food, suitable for their age and breed of your pet. Do not buy pet food that uses low-quality ingredients. Sometimes, companies overestimate the serving sizes … just like humans, an overweight pet is an unhealthy pet, so ask  your vet about the right quantities of food for your pet should you be uncertain.

Not for pet consumption The majority of food eaten by humans is not appropriate for pets and can cause health complications. Specific food – like chocolates, coffee, alcohol, macadamia nuts, caffeine, avocado, raisins, grapes, raw eggs, chives, onions, milk, salt, garlic, Xylitol, and bones – are not safe for pets. You should not give your dog cooked bones as they could break and cause choking. A raw bone bigger than your dog’s head is a better bet. Dogs should be monitored when they are gnawing on bones.

Vaccinate Vaccinations depend on the size and breed of your pet. This means that every pet has varying dosages, ask your vet about what vaccinations your pet will need, and don’t forget KZN is a high rabies area, so always make sure your pets have had their anti-rabies shots.

Shiny whites Dental health is a very important part of your pet’s overall health, and dental problems can cause, or be caused by, other health problems. Your pet’s teeth and gums should be checked at least once a year by your veterinarian to check for early signs of a problem and to keep your pet’s mouth healthy.

Invest in a pet-aid There are various pet insurances available today all offering different packages and benefits, just like our medical aids do. Take a look around your vet’s office and see what pet-aids are available, search online or ask your friends and family which ones they have had good experiences with. You should care for your pet just as if you would care for a small human, including lots of love, patience with training and teaching and tons of affection.

Spaying at an early age There are several benefits of having your pets spayed or neutered. Aside from helping them to live a longer life, spaying can also help prevent infections. It is recommended to spay your pet at an early age.

A vet for your pet Look for a good vet in your area, who can provide the best possible care for your pet and keep their contact details on hand, especially in times of emergency.
