Explaining the magnetic pull of South Africa to those who haven\u2019t grown up or lived a significant amount of time in this country is like trying to translate the expressions \u2018ag\u2019 and \u2018in a dwaal\u2019 and \u2018gees\u2019 \u2013 it just can\u2019t be done! To celebrate the distinctly South African paradigm this Heritage Month, Laager Rooibos embraced the \u2018Tell us without telling us\u2019 trend by asking South Africans to \u2018tell us you\u2019re South African without telling us you\u2019re South African\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In typically South African fashion, many of the flavourful responses included food and drink, with comments like: \u2018Nou gaan ons braai, \u2018Umqombothi\u2019, \u2018Magwinya, atchar, polony and tea\u2019, \u2018Braaibroodjies, bonfire and hoezit!\u2019, \u2018Uphutu and Amasi\u2019, \u2018I love my kota with Russian and chips\u2019, \u2018Pap, wors and chakalaka and a hot Laager Rooibos Tea\u2019, \u2018Don’t throw away that ice cream container, \u2018I make beef potjie and a nice cup of Rooibos tea and delicious koeksisters\u2019, \u2018Sugar water\u2019, and \u2018Last number kota with a cup of Laager Rooibos\u2019. One Laager fan commented that \u2018It means waking up to the fire burning outside while the porridge is cooking. Sitting around the fire at night listening to old tales told by uGogo. Watching the sunset behind the scarred mountain. It means helping others when they are truly in need because Ubuntu lives in us\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Distinctly South African expressions and greetings also dominated the responses: \u2018Mzansi 4 Sho\u2019, \u2018Uzoyithola ka njani uhleli ekhoneni\u2019, \u2018Eita Daso!\u2019, \u2018Ekse, Heita!\u2019, \u2018Wathinta abafazi Wathinta imbokodo\u2019, \u2018Molo Mhlobo Wam\u2019, \u2018Sho’t Left\u2019, \u2018Walala wasala\u2019, \u2018Laager Rooibos is altyd l\u00eakker my bra\u2019, \u2018Laduummaaa\u2019, and \u2026\u2018Finish and klaar\u2019!<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>We wouldn\u2019t be South African if there wasn\u2019t some humour thrown in there, with one Laager fan commenting that \u2018We have virtual family meetings once in a while headed by the president\u2019, and another noting \u2018I put many plastics in one plastics bag\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBeing South African means so many different things to so many different people. Despite our differences I believe if we consistently work together, we can overcome whatever adversity we face,\u201d said Wandile Ngubane, Laager Rooibos Brand Manager. \u201cWe are a nation of triumph and rebuilding \u2013 believing that no matter how dark the days get, the sun always rises again. We remain constantly interconnected by a deep love for this truly unique place no matter what walk of life we are from, because there really is no place like home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Candice Sessions, Laager Rooibos Marketing Manager, added that despite the challenges, being a South African is always a source of pride: \u201cMaybe it\u2019s because we are the only ones who understand the road we have walked, and for that we have a kind of begrudging but enduring respect for ourselves and for each other. And even those who leave often say that nowhere else ever truly feels like home. As a company that has built itself on the growth of Rooibos \u2013 one of South Africa\u2019s biggest natural local jewels \u2013 we are so grateful to be part of the South African story.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Established in 1945, Laager Rooibos has been a staple in South African homes for generations, which is why it carries the motto \u2018Strength is our tradition\u2019. To celebrate Heritage Month, as well as the rich blend of cultures and traditions found in this country, Laager Rooibos has shared a poem that captures some of the essence of what it means to call South Africa home.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of robots that aren\u2019t robots<\/span><\/p>\n

Boots that aren\u2019t shoes<\/span><\/p>\n

And bunny chows where no bunny was harmed<\/span><\/p>\n

We are the country where Jou ma se is more offensive than any swear word you can think of<\/span><\/p>\n

Where Nkalakatha made the weekends special<\/span><\/p>\n

And where the best way to show dem is to make the circle bigger<\/span><\/p>\n

We are the country of Simunye We are One<\/span><\/p>\n

Chappies Did You Know<\/span><\/p>\n

And Wilson\u2019s toffees that pay dentists salaries<\/span><\/p>\n

We are the country of evolution \u2013 from Kwaito to Gqom to Amapiano<\/span><\/p>\n

Where WWE Smackdown was a weekend obsession<\/span><\/p>\n

And John Cena is immortalised in song<\/span><\/p>\n

We are the country of Nik Naks and Cos Nothing Tastes like Fresca<\/span><\/p>\n

With an uncle in the furniture business<\/span><\/p>\n

And Husky dogs that always will be<\/span><\/p>\n

We are the country of rolling Rooibos fields<\/span><\/p>\n

That catch the sun and give us cups of goodness that taste like our childhood<\/span><\/p>\n

We are the country of walkie talkies that don\u2019t walk or talk<\/span><\/p>\n

And deep fried everything<\/span><\/p>\n

We are the country that loves to laugh<\/span><\/p>\n

And that learned the hard way to laugh at ourselves<\/span><\/p>\n

We are the country of Telefun Quiz, Yizo Yizo<\/span><\/p>\n

And Sgudi \u2018snaysi<\/span><\/p>\n

Of pick a box<\/span><\/p>\n

The Kandasamys<\/span><\/p>\n

And Riaan Cruywagen who never ages<\/span><\/p>\n

We are the country of rivals that share Nobel prizes<\/span><\/p>\n

Of scraping through by the skin of our teeth<\/span><\/p>\n

And flying by the seat of our pants<\/span><\/p>\n

We are the country of Madiba<\/span><\/p>\n

Of Desmond Tutu and Ahmed Kathrada<\/span><\/p>\n

Of Charlotte Maxeke<\/span><\/p>\n

And Tannie Evita<\/span><\/p>\n

Of second chances<\/span><\/p>\n

And miracles<\/span><\/p>\n

We are the country that gets knocked down and rises<\/span><\/p>\n

Every single time<\/span><\/p>\n

That lives in you long after you\u2019ve left<\/span><\/p>\n

And never really lets go<\/span><\/p>\n

We are the country of recovering and rebuilding<\/span><\/p>\n

And hoping and praying<\/span><\/p>\n

And then doing it all over again<\/span><\/p>\n
