International Book Giving Day<\/a> is marked in 44 countries around the world, every year on 14 February \u2013 including in South Africa.<\/p>\n

International Book Giving Day was conceived by children\u2019s book publisher Amy Broadmoore in 2012, with the aim of getting new, used, and borrowed books into the hands of as many children as possible. It\u2019s about providing access to entertainment, knowledge, inspiration, insight, escape and imagination for anyone who may not have access to as many books as a book lover would \u2013 and it\u2019s no coincidence that it falls on Valentine\u2019s Day. International Book Giving Day celebrates the love of reading, the love of books \u2013 and the chance to share that love with a fellow human.<\/p>\n

Gifting a Book Unlocks World of Reading<\/em>
\nMost children in South Africa leave Grade 1 without knowing the alphabet, while 82% of Grade 4 \u2013 the worst ability for their age in the world, according to the 2030 Reading Panel. South Africa ranked last out of 57 countries assessed in the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study, which tested the reading ability of 400 000 students globally in 2021.<\/p>\n
