Wild Child Africa is delighted to announce the resounding success of the 2024 edition of the PONDO Trail Run, held from May 22 to 26. This year\u2019s event, which featured both a one-day ULTRA and a three-day COASTER trail running experience along the breathtaking northern section of the Wild Coast, brought together 150 passionate runners united by their love of adventure and a shared commitment to making a difference.<\/p>\n

Fundraising Success and Community Impact<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 2024 PONDO Trail Run raised over R435,000 in support of its two key beneficiaries: the Pondoland Conservation Trust and Cipla\u2019s Miles for Smiles initiative. These funds will be instrumental in furthering conservation efforts in the Pondoland region and providing life-changing corrective surgery for children with cleft conditions.<\/p>\n

A portion of the funds raised will contribute to the ongoing construction of the Msikaba community centre, a project overseen by the Pondoland Conservation Trust and Wild Child Africa. Additionally, the funds will support upcoming Operation Smile surgical programmes, like the one scheduled for early November in Mthatha, where around 30 children with cleft conditions will receive life-changing surgeries.<\/p>\n

Inspiring Moments and Participant Highlights<\/strong><\/p>\n

A highlight of the event was the race registration evening, where participants had the privilege of meeting little Nzulu and his mother Sinazo. Nzulu received corrective surgery for a cleft condition through Operation Smile in October 2023.\u00a0 Nzulu\u2019s story and the visible impact of past fundraising efforts deeply moved the runners, inspiring them to rally even more support from their networks. CEO of Cipla South Africa, Paul Miller, said the following about the Cipla Foundation\u2019s involvement: \u201cThis is the third consecutive year that Cipla is participating in this event, not just to help preserve the jaw-droppingly beautiful Pondoland but also to help make a difference in local communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough our Miles for Smiles initiative, in partnership with Operation Smile, we are raising awareness and funds for children born with a cleft lip or palates \u2013 like little Nzulu. If you are passionate about making a difference and need a personal challenge, then this is the race for you,\u201d said Miller.<\/p>\n

Paediatrician and Operation Smile volunteer, Dr Hedi van der Watt, also participated in the event with her running partner, Dean Dicks. Together, they raised an impressive R61,800 for the event\u2019s charities. Dr Hedi shared her experience, saying, \u201cWhat makes the run unique is that it has a purpose. We are running for a cause that we believe in and the power to transform someone\u2019s life forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s top fundraisers, Stu Blacklaw and Thulani Khuboni of Team Manteku, once again excelled by raising a phenomenal R98,300. Having previously attended an Operation Smile surgical programme in the Eastern Cape, Stu remarked, \u201cIt\u2019s only when you witness the operation first hand that you really understand what a life-changing moment it is for all involved. That\u2019s why being involved in this amazing run is so special.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking Ahead to 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n
