Reserve the toughest plants for full sun and use areas that receive morning sun and afternoon shade for both sun lovers and those that would fare better with some shade. It\u2019s worth tweaking the design of your garden.<\/p>\n<p>Thirdly, put a lot of effort into preparing the soil before planting. There\u2019s an old saying that you should not put a R100 plant into a R50 hole, but rather a R50 plant into a R100 hole.<\/p>\n<p>That means enriching the soil with compost, other organic material and fertiliser to a depth of 30cm, so that the soil that drains well but also retains water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>All weather Angelonia <\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20072\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20072\" style=\"width: 336px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20072\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Alice-Coetzee-17-10-2025-gardening-flowers-photo-2-336x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"336\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20072\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Angelonia \u2018AngelDance\u2019 in pots.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Angelonia, also known as the summer snapdragon, is the poster child for plants that keep their poise during heat, humidity and dry periods. All varieties grow in sun, producing many spikes of flowers throughout summer.<\/p>\n<p>Their main requirement is soil that drains well. Grow in containers if the garden soil is heavy.<\/p>\n<p>Use a slow release fertilizer at planting. Water regularly until plants are established then they will thrive in hot and dry conditions<\/p>\n<p>It is not necessary to remove old flowers. In fact, \u201cdeadheading\u201d actually retards the continual blooming characteristic of the plant.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018AngelDance\u2019 ( picture above) has 45cm high spires that \u2018dance\u2019 in the wind, adding movement and colour to garden beds. The two colours in the range are Fuchsia Bicolour and Violet Bicolour.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20073\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20073\" style=\"width: 267px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20073\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Alice-Coetzee-17-10-2025-gardening-flowers-photo-3-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20073\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Angelonia \u2018Archangel Ruby Sangria.\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018Archangel\u2019 is a big bloom variety, with larger than normal Angelonia flowers set against glossy, dark green leaves. Plants are compact, growing up to 36 cm, and it is a high performing, low maintenance plant for landscapes as well as for containers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20074\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20074\" style=\"width: 267px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20074\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Alice-Coetzee-17-10-2025-gardening-flowers-photo-4-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20074\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Angelonia \u2018Guardian Angel Blue.\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018Guardian Angel\u2018 is a taller variety (50cm high) and more vigorous than \u2018Archangel\u2019. It is also an early flowering variety with big blooms. Good for landscapes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20075\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20075\" style=\"width: 266px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20075\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Alice-Coetzee-17-10-2025-gardening-flowers-photo-5-266x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20075\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Angelonia \u2018Serenita Pink\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSerenita\u2019 is the most compact and densely flowering variety providing long lasting colour with little maintenance in garden beds and containers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Iron man of plants <\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20076\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20076\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20076\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Alice-Coetzee-17-10-2025-gardening-flowers-photo-6-400x266.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20076\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anigozanthos (Kangaroo Paw) \u2018Bush Zest.\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We may have a love-hate relationship with the Aussies, but you can\u2019t fault their \u2018Kangaroo Paw\u2019 (Anigozanthos) that takes garden toughness to a new level.<\/p>\n<p>These perennials are naturally hardy, having underground rhizomes that conserve water for use during a drought. Their brilliantly coloured flowers look like Kangaroo paws and they flower from mid-spring to mid-autumn.<\/p>\n<p>They need well drained, preferably sandy soil and can be planted in full sun or partial shade. However, they do need watering to become established and some summer watering will encourage new growth and flowers.<\/p>\n<p>They show off best when mass planted and also look good in containers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Vintage charm<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20077\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20077\" style=\"width: 286px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20077\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Alice-Coetzee-17-10-2025-gardening-flowers-photo-7-286x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20077\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Achillea \u2018Milly Rock Red.\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The new Achillea hybrids of this old fashioned garden perennial have bolder, brighter colours and the clumps of\u00a0 feathery fern-like foliage hold their shape better. Plants are also quicker to reflower than older varieties.<\/p>\n<p>Plants need at least 6 hours of sunshine and grow easily in most types of soil that drain well. They do well with regular deep watering. Trim back hard after the first flush of flowers to keep plants neat and compact. Deadheading encourages more flowers.<\/p>\n<p>Achillea \u2018Hybrida\u2019 are tall and vigorous growing 60 to 90cm high producing long, pickable flower spikes. A more compact version Achillea \u2018Milly Rock\u2019 grows 30cm high and wide and is good for borders and containers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Summer stalwart<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20078\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20078\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20078\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Alice-Coetzee-17-10-2025-gardening-flowers-photo-8-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20078\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alstroemeria \u2018Summer Heat\u2019 with rudbeckia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Alstroemeria, also known as Inca lilies, are a cottage garden favourite that has been improved over the years so that it doesn\u2019t need staking but retains its abundance of blooms in a mouthwatering selection of colours.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2018Summer Paradise\u2019 garden selection consists of both tall (60cm high) and dwarf (40cm) varieties. Plants flower non-stop from September to March, producing long lasting flowering stems for the vase.<\/p>\n<p>The vigourous, tall growing Summer series performs best in fertile, moist garden soil and likes plenty of sun. They look spectacular when grouped together, the more the better. The compact Valley series is good for borders and pots.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20079\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20079\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20079\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Alice-Coetzee-17-10-2025-gardening-flowers-photo-9-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20079\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alstroemeria \u2018River Valley.\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Best of the daisies<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20080\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20080\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20080\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Alice-Coetzee-17-10-2025-gardening-flowers-photo-10-400x400.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20080\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Argyranthemum Lollies \u2018Buttermilk.\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Daisies have a charm all of their own, and varieties like Argyranthemum \u2018Madeira\u2019 (huge colour range), \u2018Grandaisy\u2019 (extra-large flowers) and \u2018Lollies\u2019 (very compact) have three times the flower power of older varieties yet are neat and compact enough for small gardens and containers. They flower throughout summer and even in winter in warm gardens.<\/p>\n<p>These long lasting, easy going plants \u00a0like regular but not excessive watering, fertilising once a month and a position that receives full morning sun and afternoon shade.
