Breakfast radio host, comedian, MC, mentor and master of the moment, Darren Maule has built a career on connection. As he marks a series of major milestones this year, we find out what still drives him.<\/strong><\/p>\n

At 4.30am, while much of KZN is still asleep, Darren Maule is already up and about, dressed, and mentally dialled in. There is comfort in the rituals: clothes laid out the night before, multiple alarms set, and an early-morning coffee shared with his wife, Anna, all help set him up for the day. By the time the \u2018on air\u2019 light flashes, Darren is exactly where he needs to be – prepared, present and ready to connect.<\/p>\n

One of South Africa\u2019s most versatile and experienced entertainers, Darren\u2019s legendary quick wit, impressive improv and the funniest physical comedy, have made him a household name, face and voice for more than two decades.<\/p>\n

This year marks a trio of anniversaries, speaking not only of longevity, but intention. Mid-year sees 15 years as host of East Coast Radio\u2019s Breakfast Show, the start of the year marked 15 years clean and sober and February sees his 10th anniversary as comedy MC of arguably Durban\u2019s flagship comedy event, Kings & Queens of Comedy.<\/p>\n

Ask Darren what links his radio, comedy and MC\u2019ing work, and his answer is immediate, \u201cit\u2019s an \u2018audience first\u2019 mindset, meaning what will the audience get out of the moment? How will it be memorable? What can I do to make it better? It starts and stops there.\u201d\u00a0 When asked what keeps him so energised he explains, \u201cvariety is key for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

There is no such thing as a typical day for Darren and he\u2019s certain it\u2019s the variety that keeps him fresh. \u201cI could be in silly dress-up for a 5am photoshoot, on air from six to nine, recording ad voice-overs after the show, then MC\u2019ing a corporate event or comedy show that evening, while fitting in some meetings or a quick shoot in between. Each type of performance environment feeds the other,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n

Time on stage sharpens his radio edge, with live audiences help keeping him agile and present. Comedy MC\u2019ing remains a super-skill for Darren. It\u2019s where he started just over 20 years ago, as the resident MC at the legendary Parker\u2019s Comedy at Montecasino.<\/p>\n

Darren\u2019s crowd and \u2018hype\u2019 work took on a life of its own back then, and today many of the top comedians in the country have acknowledged he remains their comedy MC of choice.<\/p>\n

Darren delights in this kind of work, \u201cholding an audience from start to finish, stitching together varied lineups and levels of talent, reading the room, improvising, landing the comebacks, it\u2019s all a thrill,\u201d he says. \u201cIt keeps me sharp and definitely makes my on-air hotter. I always know if something has resonated at either a stand-up gig or on air, because people will stop and mention a moment to me months, or even years later.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite more than two decades in the entertainment business, what never ceases to amaze Darren is the depth of emotional connection audiences have, with especially radio and television. Fans often share memories with him – tales of growing up with his voice ever-present in the car, laughing to his jokes with siblings, or debating the legendary \u2018Darren Maule\u2019s Quick Quiz\u2019 answers on the school-run. Wherever he goes, someone is guaranteed to call out \u201cGood Mauling\u201d.<\/p>\n

One conversation that has never left him, was a listener confiding in him that her father who had passed away, had never been great at conversation. \u201cOur best memories,\u201d she said, \u201cwere driving to school together, chatting about the things you said on air.\u201d Darren pauses when he recounts it. \u201cThose are the moments that stay with me and keep me focused on delivering. When there are more than a million people listening each week, it\u2019s impossible to please everyone all of the time but it\u2019s my responsibility to try and bring real light, laughter and connection, as often and authentically as possible\u201d.<\/p>\n

Mid 2026 will see Darren reaching 15 consecutive years, waking up KZN as breakfast show host on East Coast Radio. Darren does not take it lightly. \u201cIt\u2019s a privilege. I love my job, our amazing listeners and all the incredibly talented individuals I get to work with every day.\u201d he says. \u201cIf you merely go through the motions, listeners will hear it, preparation is everything, as is presence. For three hours each morning, nothing else matters. All the team want is the best start to the day, for every person who has chosen to tune in.\u201d<\/p>\n

With a SAFTA for comedy and a Telkom Radio Award already on the shelf, he has over the last two years earned two Durban \u2018Best of SA\u2019 wins, was recognised in 2024 as a KZN Top Business Leader and recently listed as a top five Best Breakfast Show Presenter (commercial radio) in the country, with a nomination at the South African National Radio Awards. With his extensive experience in entertainment, mentorship is a key part of his focus. 2024 and 2025 saw him on the judging panel for the global on air talent search \u2018Radio Star\u2019 and he often has up-coming talent in both radio and comedy reach out for guidance and support.<\/p>\n

Darren\u2019s number one piece of advice? \u201cBe authentic, bring yourself and stop trying to sound how you think a radio presenter or a comedian should sound. Don\u2019t perform at your audience, perform with them,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve got two more exciting judging roles in 2026 but more of that later; for now my lips are sealed!\u201d he teases.<\/p>\n

Fifteen years clean and sober – Darren says this was a decision that changed his life in ways nothing else ever has.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Another milestone that runs quieter but deeper is his 15 years clean and sober. \u201cIt\u2019s the best thing I\u2019ve ever done,\u201d Darren says simply. \u201cThe quality of my life, my relationships, my parenting, my work, everything is better.\u201d This year sees him begin sharing his sobriety journey on the speakers\u2019 circuit, focusing on his personal story. \u201cWhat worked for me will not work for everyone,\u201d he says. \u201cBut sharing stories helps people feel less alone.\u201d His honest and vulnerable video shared on New Year\u2019s Eve racked up more than 150,000 views quickly. \u201cNever have I received more messages in response to a post than that. If people find the story of my sobriety journey inspiring, then it\u2019s my responsibility to tell it,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Offstage and off air, Darren\u2019s world is anchored by the close family he and Anna have created together. His daughter \u2018Mouse\u2019 has just entered her matric year, a milestone that brings pride and perspective. Mouse was in Grade 5 when Anna came into her life, and Darren expresses delight at how all three daughters have bonded and connected.<\/p>\n

The way he is unafraid to express his love for Anna is a joy to witness. Listeners and social media followers alike love the story of how they met and continue to be captivated by Darren\u2019s journey to finding true love. \u201cI can\u2019t describe the happiness she brings to me and our family. Anna\u2019s presence makes everything better,\u201d he explains. \u201cShe lights up a room,\u201d he smiles, \u201cwherever I gig now, there\u2019s disappointment if she doesn\u2019t come with me!\u201d<\/p>\n

Their love story, first shared with Get It readers a few years ago, has only deepened. The couple are settled on the North Coast, lovingly renovating a home there, and when not working or enjoying family time are actively involved in community projects, often following up with some of the \u2018Big Favour\u2019 or Department of Social Development teams Darren has worked with. As a couple, they continue working with and stay in touch with many remarkable individuals, some of whom have now become friends. Darren\u2019s passion for supporting vulnerable communities is well known, and he has helped raise millions for those in need over the years.<\/p>\n

As he steps into the year ahead, the through-line remains clear: show up, care deeply and never underestimate the power of a shared moment. He\u2019s grateful, energised, still making us laugh, and somehow making us feel a little more human too.<\/p>\n
